So, I’m not entirely sure if this belongs here—if it doesn't, feel free to move it... but a friend of mine just told me she gets a headache and her go-to remedy is to head home and drink her own urine. I actually stood up in shock. Like, BAM. And then she has the nerve to ask me how I’ve never heard of this "medicine" before. Honestly, I think she might be a little out of it, but then I happened to catch this segment on a show about folk remedies, and they were actually mentioning that people used to treat things that way back in the day! So now I'm left wondering—who's the crazy one here? Personally, I wouldn't touch that with a ten-foot pole; I'd probably rather eat a cockroach than try that. Has anyone else ever heard of this stuff?

I once heard about this totally unhinged yoga guru who actually taught his followers to drink their own urine. Apparently, some guys who were flexible enough even went as far as putting their junk in their mouths to drink it straight from the source.

And get this—they’re actually bragging about it! This guru is out here claiming it can cure cancer. Honestly, if you try that, the only thing you're curing is your sanity, not any disease.

U large quantities, urine can actually be toxic
if you make a habit of drinking it every single day.

Look, my take? It's gross. It's basically just nasty pee. Whether it’s actually toxic or not—and exactly how much it takes to make you sick—is really what matters for anyone actually drinking it.

A little bit? 😍 What's she gonna do if she's actually losing it? Maybe start eating her own crap?😲

🤣

This thread probably should have been deleted. Someone might actually take this seriously and try it. You never know, I guess.

Yeah, I’m totally on board with shutting it down because nobody seems to have any actual answers! But if you happened to catch that documentary on PBS about traditional folk medicine—they mentioned that these remedies actually work, and people used to rely on them all the time back in the day. It shows there's some real substance there, too, beyond just cultists or old-school snake oil salesmen. Honestly, though, I wouldn't trust this specific local healer any further than I could throw her; I wouldn't even grab a glass of water from her house!

It's toxic. It's full of metabolic waste. Kidneys don't exist just for decoration; urine is basically a concentrated dump of everything the body wants to get rid of. Sure, it might contain trace heavy metals, but getting those out usually requires actual chelation therapy, not a DIY liquid diet.

But if you’ve ever watched a documentary on PBS about folk medicine, they talk about this stuff being used as a cure back in the day. That suggests there's some actual basis to it beyond just cultists or old wives' tales. Honestly though, knowing the lady I know who does this, I wouldn't even drink water from her house.

TV stations will tell you anything. They told us the economy was going to bounce back, and look where we are. They claim there are detergents that can scrub burnt grease off a pan with one single swipe.

Don't buy into that nonsense. That's television for you. Sure, public broadcasting is supposed to be educational, but let's be real—we live in the real world.

There are instances where people in extreme survival situations have actually resorted to drinking their own urine. The thing about urine is that the act itself is repulsive to most people because we’ve been conditioned from birth to think it's disgusting, vile, and a carrier for diseases. We recoil from it for those exact reasons. But if you step back and look at it purely from a medical standpoint... the urine of a healthy person is sterile. It has that specific scent due to urea, but beyond that, it contains varying amounts of sodium, potassium, and other essential elements needed to sustain life. So... strictly speaking, there shouldn't be any harm in it.

I really can't get behind the idea that it's just "stuff the body doesn't need." Urine is how the body regulates isotonicity in our fluids. It’s primarily how we flush potassium and sodium to balance the whole system. You can't exactly claim the body doesn't need sodium and potassium... seriously? Not even in a crazy hypothetical scenario.

You can't exactly argue that the body doesn't need sodium and potassium. That's just common sense.

Fair enough. In that case, go ahead and drink more seawater. 🙂 Seawater is hypertonic. And urine isn't just hypertonic; it's toxic because it’s loaded with urea and a bunch of other organic compounds that the body dumps specifically because it views them as waste.
I'm sure your kidneys would absolutely love that.
As for sterility, sure, urine is sterile while it's sitting in the bladder, but it picks up bacteria the second it starts making its exit.

It wouldn't be doing your kidneys any favors.

Look, toxin concentration varies from person to person depending on a lot of different things. Regardless, nobody is actually drinking their own urine every day. What's the point of this debate? 🙂

So, what if it turns out urine isn't actually toxic, or at least not in small amounts? Would that mean it’s totally fine to drink it just because you've got a headache?

I honestly think the whole point isn't even about whether it's poisonous or not. It's more about whether the person thinking about drinking it has completely lost their marbles.

Brenda Carter96 is more of an acquaintance than a close friend of mine. I actually started this thread because of that documentary, but it seems like nobody else caught it? Look, I know you can find stuff like that out in the desert or in some remote camps, but honestly, I’d rather eat a snake than deal with any of that. And what do you mean, fetishes? Anyway, thanks for all the input!
