Washington, D.C. Volunteer Center

Been thinking about volunteering for a while now... honestly would love to help out at some foster care homes, but idk if they'd even take me. Wouldn't mind doing computer stuff or office work or helping organize events either. Just got way too much free time on my hands since I don't have college work to deal with for another two months, and my social life is basically dead anyway... feels like the right time to jump in. So I found this organization based in Washington, D.C. online, and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about them? Like, are they actually legit or...?? Getting a little skeptical because they asked for $27 right away for membership, and who knows if they even need people for the kind of stuff I'm looking for, or if they'll actually find me a spot. If anyone's worked with them before, please let me know, thanks

I remember asking them about volunteering once—they immediately started hitting me with lists of fees and paperwork. Honestly, the membership dues aren't even the big issue, but... I was looking into some volunteer gigs out in Maine helping with soup kitchens or something similar, and they started pitching their programs. It turned out that doing actual manual labor there would cost me just as much as a regular vacation. I don't mind paying a little something, and I wasn't expecting a full salary or anything, but the idea that I'd be working my tail off all day cleaning stuff up only to pay the same price as someone just lounging on the beach... it felt wrong...
In the end, I wanted to do some volunteer work over in Washington, D.C., so I just went straight to the source, handled everything myself, and bypassed them entirely.

Btw.. if you're thinking about volunteering with foster kids, try reaching out to Nazov. You could even give them a call just to ask about their volunteer program.
I know they'll need paperwork like a clean record from the Department of Justice and a doctor's note saying you're mentally fit..

Vanguard is fantastic; I know quite a few people who volunteer at all sorts of events. I’m a member myself, and I receive several emails every day detailing where and when they need extra hands. When you first sign up, you can specify that you're interested in volunteering at children's homes, though I'm not entirely certain what the next steps look like.

I suggest having a conversation with them directly, but make sure to find someone who knows the exact locations, otherwise you might end up getting lost. 🤣
