Best music movies?

I’m not entirely sure if there’s already an existing thread or perhaps something similar floating around this subforum, so if there is, please do point me in the right direction.

So, I was wondering if anyone might have some recommendations for music-centric movies—specifically anything centered around rock? (Or even better, if you know of something in the metal realm)

To be clear, I’m not really looking for documentaries or those standard band biographies; I’m thinking more along the lines of something fun like Rock School.

Definitely Almost Famous. It’s one of my absolute favorites, if not *the* favorite. It's set back in 1973, where this 15-year-old kid, William Miller, dreams of becoming a rock critic for The Rolling Stones magazine. He actually lands a gig writing about a band called Stillwater on tour. It was directed by Cameron Crowe, and you could say it's semi-autobiographical since it's based on Crowe's own experience touring with the Allman Brothers Band, which eventually led him to become a critic and then a director. For the soundtrack, he had his wife Nancy Wilson (who used to be in Heart) handle things, so you can expect a ton of great 70s rock hits. Personally, I love the script and the music most; there's plenty of drama even though it's pretty funny. Plus, getting to see the legendary rock critic Lester Bangs on screen is such a cool bonus. I think it might have been on TV recently, so you may have already seen it 😉

Then there's Detroit Rock City, which is a total winner if you're into Kiss. It's a comedy about four high schoolers doing everything in their power to snag tickets for a Kiss concert. It's packed with their music, and the original members even show up at the end. The story also takes place in the 70s, but this time it's '77.

If you're in the mood for something silly, Airheads isn't bad at all. It's about three metalheads who are so desperate to get their song played on the radio that they actually resort to terrorism and take a radio station hostage. Pretty wild, right? I think that one was on TV lately too.

A lucky kid, really part of that new wave coming out of the old New York City scene, it’s almost too good.

As for The Doors, I feel like it gives a slightly skewed perspective on them; it’s honestly pretty tough to follow unless you’ve already poured over a biography or spent way too much time digging into Jim's messy private life.

Then there's those final days—it's supposed to be about Kurt, I guess, but the whole movie is just garbage. It feels like two hours of my life I'll never get back.

24-hour party people. It's a biopic, but it focuses on Tony Wilson—the guy who basically ignited the whole Manchester scene—rather than just following the musicians. You get all those Joy Division, New Order, and Happy Mondays vibes, plus some other gritty indie legends. It’s honestly a blast and feels super postmodern.
But look, nothing really touches This Is Spinal Tap. That's hands down one of the funniest movies ever made. I'm totally with you on that one, it's an absolute classic in my book.
