Pregnant or not?

My girlfriend went to see her OB-GYN this morning. Long story short, the doc was pretty convinced she’s pregnant since we haven't been using protection for a while now. She headed straight from the clinic to the drugstore to grab a $23 test—you know, one of those ones you can use anytime—and it says she's NOT?!... Seriously, who am I supposed to believe here? Is there any way to know for sure right now, or are we just stuck waiting for 🤣

What exactly did the OBGYN use to confirm the pregnancy? An ultrasound?

The test might have come back negative if she’s in the very early stages, or it could be an ectopic pregnancy (though a doctor would likely spot that—but not always). There’s also the chance she bought a cheap, low-quality test that requires much higher hormone levels to trigger a positive.

Just get Vagisil or First Response.

They should redo the test using their first morning urine sample.

So, she went out and grabbed one of those intimate kits that supposedly works any time of day...
But then he looks at her ultrasound and claims her uterus looks swollen and dilated, even though everything else seems totally normal?!
To make matters weirder, she had a period about five or six days ago that lasted just one single day. I have no idea how he can be so dead set on her being pregnant or how he's so "certain" a test is going to confirm it...

Don't freak out just yet...my OBGYN totally gave me a false alarm once too..and everything turned out fine in the end....

So, how far along is she supposedly? You really can't tell just by looking at someone! Maybe it’s just too early and the tests are giving false readings.
Anyway, a close friend of mine once had a home pregnancy test come up positive twice when she actually wasn't pregnant at all, so... who knows? I know those tests are generally reliable, but they aren't foolproof! She should probably just head back to her OB-GYN in a little while to be sure.

I highly doubt that was actually her period...
if that wasn't her period, then by my math, she’s likely about six weeks along, which is plenty of time for an OBGYN to detect it during an exam.

A period can happen during pregnancy, but it’s usually much lighter and shorter than usual. It makes sense why he might have assumed she was pregnant.
However, he shouldn't have stated it so confidently without being absolutely certain.

Clearblue is an incredibly reliable pregnancy test. If her period was already five or six days late—which it was—she would be far enough along for a test to catch it.

Either she isn't pregnant, or she’s one of those rare cases where a test comes up negative even into the second trimester due to lower hormone levels.

My period showed up right on schedule, so I’m positive it was the real deal and not just some random discharge or whatever. It only lasted a day, though. Honestly, the waiting part is the absolute worst...

I’d suggest heading back to the OB-GYN. This might not even be about pregnancy.

If the doctor claims she's pregnant but the test is negative, there could be an underlying medical issue. Don't ignore this. She needs to tell her doctor about the negative result so they can order follow-up tests if necessary.

Don't just sit there and wait... for how long?
She should retake the test tomorrow morning using her first urine of the day. The instructions say the test picks up trace amounts of hormones, but those levels are highest in the morning, which maximizes the chance of an accurate reading.

Wait, seriously?!😲 Dammit, now you've got me stressed out too. I had something like a period last week—only lasted like 2 or 3 days and was super light... but my actual period isn't even due for a few days. And we haven't been using protection for a while now.

Of course I’m gonna chime in 🙂 , but seriously, why is everyone suddenly obsessed with using VGV protection? 😂 Look, a woman can have her period and be pregnant at the same time without any drama...

One egg gets fertilized, then the ovary releases another one anyway, which also gets fertilized and implants in the uterus.

Besides, those "periods" during the third or fourth month of pregnancy aren't even actual menstruation.

So, during my second pregnancy, I had this whole crazy situation where my period was already two weeks late, yet the first test I took came back negative. I figured maybe I just jumped the gun, so I grabbed another one a few days later, but that one was also negative too. It wasn't until I finally took a third test—about 20 days after my period should have started—that it actually turned up positive.

That happens more often than you'd think. That’s why I suggested her hormones might just be too low for the test to pick up anything yet.
Still, she should probably just head back to her OB-GYN and get a straight answer.

Tests can be unreliable when they give you a false negative, but once those cheap ones show a positive... there’s no arguing with that result.
