Photoshop beginner's guide

Hey guys, quick question—does anyone know if there’s actually a definitive "bible" out there for Adobe Photoshop CS 3? I’m looking for something super deep and detailed, like a one-stop shop where everything is covered in one place, if that even exists. And honestly, I’d really prefer an American version rather than anything in English—I just find it easier to digest that way. I know the internet is basically drowning in random tutorials and clips, but I’m old school; I really want something I can actually hold in my hands...

You can find them in any bookstore... whenever you happen to wander through $100... massive, exhaustive volumes... but honestly, you'll learn way more if you just go rogue and dive into Photoshop on your own. Open up an image... mess around with a tool or throw an effect at it... and just watch how it reacts.

Sure, they could try teaching themselves by clicking around tools and seeing what happens, but that’s a slow way to learn. Honestly, nothing beats having a mentor to guide you through the process. If a mentor isn't in the budget, picking up a solid textbook is a decent fallback, but just poking at software without any actual structure isn't going to cut it if they want to actually master the craft.

Wait, what? What do you mean by "dead mentors"? If she actually wanted a mentor, she wouldn't be hunting for books and tutorials in the first place. And why wouldn't someone learn effectively just by studying the software? I basically taught myself by diving deep into it (started about 4 years ago), putting in maybe 2 to 4 hours every single day when I had the free time 😁 , and honestly, I think I've gotten pretty good at using the tool—whatever I can dream up, I can usually pull off 🙂 .

That’s pretty much how it went for me too, except I’m not a professional graphic designer. When I finally got my hands on my first version of Adobe Photoshop 7.0—which was honestly the best version—I took the exact same approach. I just played around with it. Back then, there weren't nearly as many tutorials available as there are now. Besides, I don't think graphic design is really about following tutorials. It’s an art where you're creating something from nothing, and imagination is basically the only limit. If you just stick to tutorials, you end up learning how to work like a robot. I know guys who can't even find a specific tool in the software if they didn't see it used in a video first. Like, what are you going to do if someone asks you to design a corporate logo, but you can only make it look like some template you saw online? You just swap the text and call it a day? Yeah, real "designer" move right there. I'm not saying tutorials suck, but you shouldn't rely on them exclusively; you really need to dig into the software itself. It's kind of like if you learned how to drive in a Honda Civic during driver's ed, but then you get behind the wheel of an Alfa Romeo and realize you have no idea what you're doing.

I learned my way around Adobe Photoshop 7.0 through some online tutorials, I guess.
