Personally, I tend to run in circles with people who are mostly into that classic 80s and 90s pop-rock vibe—think more along the lines of Hall & Oates—or maybe some newer stuff like Breakbeat. As for everyone else, I honestly couldn't care less.

It’s honestly kind of depressing how pop, rap, and nu-metal are basically running the show right now, but here in the States, we've also got that whole country music scene dominating everything, which just makes me want to cry...

Why "unfortunately" when it comes to hip hop...????? I don't get pop either. There’s some great stuff out there, just nothing like that Britney Spears garbage...
So, do you actually know the history of hip hop?? Have you really listened to enough artists to have an opinion???!!? It's fine if hip hop isn't your thing, okay... but why the "unfortunately"?? Personally, it's just sad to see people gravitating toward someone like 50 Cent instead of the real deal—legends like Rakim, KRS-One, Das EFX, or the Wu-Tang Clan...

It honestly feels like the most popular music in America for years now hasn't been anything from the radio, but rather those catchy jingles from TV commercials, little snippets from promos, or even just the theme songs for shows and movies. It’s funny, really—that seems to be the one thing that actually grabs the general public's attention. You only have to look at our top trending song searches to see what I mean 🤷 last year, that specific track from a commercial for a brand like Coca-Cola was searched for way more than any actual hit single on the Billboard charts... ☕

Alright, I see where you're coming from. You've got a point, but like you mentioned, most people gravitate toward the mediocre representatives of those genres, so those big names end up becoming the face of the whole movement.

Pop is definitely the most POPular genre out there, right? =)
If you ask me about my hometown, maybe somewhere like Columbus or the surrounding areas, I’m pretty sure country music is still king. But man, I really hope things evolve as we move forward, because if you aren't listening to anything else, you're basically stuck in the past with zero variety. 😢 Honestly, the vibe would definitely level up if we had more spots like a legendary club in Austin or some cool venue in Nashville where they actually switch up the programming depending on the night.
Rap (you know, the mainstream stuff—Eminem, 50 Cent...) is definitely climbing the charts...

Everyone seems to be complaining about folk music, but honestly, I can’t think of two decent artists in the genre—and that’s being generous if we’re talking about those cheesy country tracks you hear on some low-budget radio station... I don't even know where people go to listen to this stuff. What is it, really? Who is actually singing it? I live in Chicago, and I haven't heard a single note of it—it feels like it’s strictly a Midwest thing or something. No one ever forces folk music on me; I could walk out of my apartment all day and never encounter it on stations like KROQ, WXRT, or even local news outlets... it’s like they don't even exist. I don't get why everyone is so bitter about it when you can easily just avoid it. It isn't like some inescapable cultural staple where you have to know every lyric just to function in society... or some political figure you can't escape. In my experience, while the genre exists, it’s hardly the plague people make it out to be... at least based on these posts, it seems much more widespread than what I see in my daily life.

As far as I'm concerned, let people listen to whatever they want. But if it's as popular as everyone claims—including you and the rest of the crowd here—then it says something about the state of the American music scene. I mean, when you're constantly served nothing but mediocre indie acts or some guy rapping about how peaceful his block is, it’s hardly surprising that people turn to more primal, low-brow distractions...

My impression is that most people in the States mostly listen to pop—specifically that trendy, polished kind. There isn't much of a filter for quality; it's just whatever gets imported from overseas via UK playlists (if it weren't for that, I guess some idiot would be obsessing over Muse)... and that kind of pop is what gets pumped through mainstream FM stations. You hear it everywhere—in grocery stores, coffee shops, and so on...

Just another pointless topic. Honestly, the only answer you’re gonna get here is some trashy pop-country bullshit. The influence of whatever mainstream radio stars are blowing up right now on these neighborhoods is just insane. On a Saturday night, when I'm heading home and grab a quick bite at a diner to stay alive, I can hear that loud, tacky music blasting from four different clubs that are basically door-to-door. And the crowd? It's getting younger by the day—I'm talking middle schoolers. I don't get what goes through their heads, walking in there at 14, but hey, it's happening. It would be way more normal to just hang out with your friends at the park and grab a soda, but nope, they'd rather go dance to that garbage instead.
