How to hardcode subtitles into a movie

I did a bit of digging on this earlier and stumbled upon some tools like Avidemux and SubRip... I know people have managed to make it work using those, but I can't seem to get anything to stick. I just keep running into constant errors. If anyone knows of a different program that actually works, I’d really appreciate the help.

Honestly, you should just grab some of that industrial-strength super glue—the kind that sets in like one second flat—and just stick it right onto the DVD or CD, or even directly onto the screen, and it’ll hold perfectly tight without budging ever again. 😂 😂 😂 🤣 🤣 🤣

Look, it's pretty simple... I've got the movie file without any subtitles, and I've downloaded a separate subtitle file. Now, how do I merge them into one single file? I mean, how do I hardcode the subtitles directly into the video? I'm not talking about just clicking "load subtitle" in VLC every time I watch it. I want to burn them in so I can play the movie on a DVD with the translations already included. Hopefully, that makes sense.

I guess you could just grab "Handbrake," put the movie and the subtitle file in a new folder on your desktop, but I should mention that they have to have the exact same filename for it to work, otherwise the software won't pick up the subtitles. So, if the movie is called "Rush Hour 3," the subtitle file needs to be named exactly "Rush Hour 3" too—spaces, dots, everything. Open the program, go to "add video file," select the movie from that folder, and check if it actually found the subtitles (it should list something like "subtitle 1 external" in the info section). Just hit "convert" after you decide where you want the finished DVD saved, and voilà, you've got a DVD with burned-in subtitles. Just keep in mind that this might burn the movie straight to a disc right after converting if that's how you set it up.
But before you even try that, maybe check if the subtitles actually sync up right using "Subtitle Edit."👍

It’s not a bad move using Avidemux if you’ve already got the SubRip filter installed.

Handbrake doesn't actually burn the subtitles in; you have to enable them separately in the settings

Look, steeleagle152... I grabbed Handbrake and followed your steps exactly. In this case, I was working with Blood Diamond, but all the program does is ask me which movie I want to convert and where to save it. That's it. Nothing else.
On top of that, everything converted in English, even though I used the exact same filename for the movie and the subtitle file.
And obviously, the subtitles are in American English... Subtitle Edit worked fine for merging them, but that's a side issue.
I finally realized I'm running an old version of the software that doesn't even have the option to add a subtitle.
I tried downloading a newer version, but the interface is complete gibberish—it looks like it’s in some random language I can't even recognize.
If you have a direct link for the right version, I'd really appreciate it. Also, I heard through the grapevine that the subtitle needs to be an .srt file.

Regarding Winavia, get this: I’ll be sitting there at 99%, and out of nowhere, it pops up with a "Sorry, Winavia must be closed" error and just nukes two-thirds of my download. And the best part? It delivers the whole message in perfect American English. But hey, what do you expect...

So, can you just merge subtitles directly with a DivX file? I was thinking maybe I don't actually need to convert the whole movie to a DVD just to get the subs baked in.

That's because you're trying to run the installer instead of just unzipping the archive, man. You could probably try other software, but honestly, just put in the effort to get these running. It's not like you need a NASA supercomputer to make these work.

Alright... I went ahead and installed Avidemux and SubRip, then found some guy online who laid out the whole process step-by-step. I followed his instructions to a T, but here’s the thing: it translated the movie into English. I have no idea what happened. I’m using an American subtitle file and merging it into the video, but when I check the first frame in Avidemux
the translation shows up in English, and the second frame shows it in American... according to that guide, the second frame is supposed to be a preview of how the final movie will look. So why on earth am I seeing an English translation?

Correction... it doesn't work at all. Anyway, the movie is Blood Diamond. It was originally made for South Africa, so at first it just had their local language subtitles, but I couldn't get the translation to embed properly. Not this time, anyway.

Alright, I finally did it... I managed to mux the subtitles into the movie and everything seems to be working. But there's a catch—it’s not exactly a smooth ride because the audio and video are completely out of sync. The subtitles line up perfectly with the sound, but the picture is lagging behind. I tried using Avidemux first, but I read somewhere that VirtualDubMode might handle things better, so I just downloaded that. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

I don't want to start a whole new thread here... but does anyone know how to burn subtitles onto a DVD, or maybe just add them to the menu?
