So, I've got these files that need to go straight to the CNC machine in .pgm binary format, but my current workflow is stuck using AutoCAD .dxf files.

Does anyone know of a decent little utility that can churn out these .pgm files?

Apparently, these .pgm files are just the binary version of an ASCII .xxl file.

It’s all tied into the Xilog controller, if I’m reading this right.

Searching for info on this online feels like looking for a needle in a haystack—it's like everyone is gatekeeping it by charging a fortune for specialized software like Aspire, complete with those annoying proprietary hardware dongles. I heard there's some converter called winxiso.exe tucked away inside that Aspire package.

If anyone could drop a link to a working DXF to PGM converter, or even just a breakdown of how this binary PGM format actually works, I’d really appreciate it.

Honestly, this is way outside my usual wheelhouse, so it took me a minute just to figure out which players are actually involved in this whole setup.

So, what’s the plan? Are you looking to push code from Autodesk directly to the CNC, or do you actually need a way to pull files off the machine and back onto your PC so they don't just pile up on the controller?

Keep in mind, most of this software comes locked down with hardware dongles anyway...

Nah, the software is Xilog. It runs right on the computer, cranking out those .pgm binary files that get sent over to the CNC, which then uses them to handle all the tool paths and machining.

The whole headache was that we were trying to bypass the Xilog software entirely by feeding existing G-code files directly into .pgm format. Turns out, that wasn't how it worked.

We did an inspection of the NC machine this morning and realized it actually showed up with all the software included—even that winxiso.exe utility. That little guy can take a plain old text file [with an .xxl extension] and compile it into the required binary .pgm file.

So now, the "hard" part is just the trivial task of rewriting the G-code from one ASCII file into a nearly identical .xxl file, then running it through that winxiso.exe to compile it.

Thanks for sticking with me. Problem solved.

Reading through these posts reminded me—I’m about to run into my own headache. I need to figure out how to transfer programs from my PC to a CNC machine using a floppy drive. Does anyone know which software I should be using to actually write these programs? Any help would be appreciated.
