Does anyone actually know the requirements to qualify for this compensation? I’m talking about that new law where parents of critically ill kids can basically hire themselves out as caregivers. Thanks.

I know you can get child benefits around $333 for kids with special needs—but there’s also that extra caregiving assistance available. You really need to reach out to your local Department of Social Services to look into it.

Does anyone have insight into how things work for "adult children" who act as full-time caregivers? For example, I’m currently out of the workforce because I’m providing total care for my mother, who is completely immobile due to severe complications from a brain tumor.

FEDERAL REGISTER 79/07 - http://www.govinfo.gov/examples/federalregister/2007/2488.htm
SECTION 77a
The caregiver status is granted to one parent when a child requires specialized medical-technical care to maintain their quality of life, provided a doctor recommends it and the parent is qualified to perform those tasks.

but you gotta verify how to actually claim it through Social Security...

Angela Wright - check with your local social services office. I bet there's some specific policy for this... since you obviously can't work full-time while caring for someone that sick...
let me know what you find out if it's not too much trouble...

It’s pretty much the same story. You get some tiny little stipend from the Department of Social Services, but honestly—the bureaucracy is enough to drive you insane. A late neighbor of mine used to vent about this all the time. You have to hunt down every single discharge summary—and if the lady was staying at a wellness retreat or a rehab center, you need the paperwork from there too, plus copies of every medical report from the last six months. There’s even this specific form you have to pick up at a local shop that needs a signature from your primary care doctor. Then, you take that whole mountain of paperwork down to the social services office and just pray they actually pass it along to the review board.
