I’ve been scouring the forums, but I can't find anything helpful regarding these liver enzymes—any advice would be appreciated. A friend just got her bloodwork back, and the results aren't exactly great.
It looks like this:

MCHC 348 -> limit 345
W-SCR % 37 -> limit 35
Urine specific gravity is 1.030 -> normal 1.025
Epithelial cells -> high
Bacteria present slightly
AST 33 -> limit 30
ALT 51 -> limit 36

I realize it's not exactly a medical emergency, but seeing both ALT and AST elevated isn't ideal. Bilirubin is normal. About two months ago, she went through two full courses of Penicillin. Could those pills be the culprit? She did have Gilbert's syndrome as a kid, though her bilirubin is fine now and there's never been any follow-up issues with her liver. Otherwise, she's generally in pretty good health.
Could someone help me make sense of these numbers or suggest possible causes? I know things like hepatitis or mono could be on the table... but if there are other reasons for these kinds of levels, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I know it isn't necessarily drastic, but I suppose it's not good when both ALT and AST are elevated. Bilirubin is normal. About two months ago, she took two boxes of Penicillin. Could those pills be the cause? She had neonatal jaundice as a baby, though her bilirubin wasn't high, and there were never any follow-up issues with her liver or anything. Otherwise, she's in pretty good health.
I was hoping someone could interpret these results a bit and maybe suggest a possible diagnosis, or rather, potential causes for these numbers. I mean, I know it could be hepatitis, mono... things like that. But if there are other causes you know of that might trigger this... thanks in advance.

Actually, I'm interested in this too, but no one has been able to explain it to me yet... For me, my AST and ALT have been slightly elevated for years now, and I have fatty liver...!!!???😲 😕

So, how many years did they hike up your rates? It's bizarre... seriously—if anyone actually knows WHAT is going on here, please let me know...

The most concerning levels are... AST 40, ALT 61

AST and ALT levels can spike due to a million different things, most of which aren't even a big deal. For instance, if someone goes a bit too hard on the drinks, their transaminases will likely be up the next day. However, if they stay elevated alongside fatty liver issues, you'll need to look into a liver biopsy.
stormyhawk15, sorry if I'm scaring you...
On the bright side: your enzyme levels aren't actually that high. Usually, we start worrying when they're 3 or 4 times above the normal range.
Maybe try getting tested at a different lab... sometimes the reagents just aren't up to par.

You mentioned alcohol—I don't know about you, stormyhawk15, but my friend doesn't touch the stuff. She might have one beer a month, smokes, but barely... We suspected mono, especially since her lymph nodes were already swollen from a previous strep infection—which she was treated for. Is it actually possible for some lingering strep to just stay there and "threaten" her?

I didn't say they were drinking it; I'm just pointing out that liver enzymes spike when you consume more alcohol. I don't see how strep would have anything to do with that. Maybe someone else can make that connection...

Not sure if this is actually relevant, but I’m throwing it out there—maybe someone will spot something useful...
