I checked them out on Harold Wright54's recommendation and they clicked immediately... kinda sits right between Band of Horses and My Morning Jacket...

So, I’m sitting here listening to the new album right now, and honestly—I haven't even figured out what to make of it yet. All I know for certain is that "Z" was an incredibly tough act to follow, so this one really needs to be something special if it's going to surpass it.
Just a quick side note—someone brought up Band of Horses earlier. I have to say, that vocal style they've got going with James is unlike anything I've heard before, but personally? It just didn't do it for me.

I was checking out their US tour dates for the year today, and the closest show is way up in Seattle, which is definitely not a quick trip from here. 😢

It’s the same story with me; Fleet Foxes never quite hit the mark, though I could always get behind Band of Horses..

To me, Band of Horses feels entirely different from My Morning Jacket—completely distinct. Aside from that specific vocal style, I suppose.
As for Fleet Foxes, I just can't shake the feeling that they're a bit too precious. They're different again. In truth, they all feel somewhat similar to me—but as long as they keep singing with that James-style voice, they could probably mimic anyone they wanted if they felt like it. 😍

The whole album clicked for me right away, which definitely wasn't the case with their previous stuff. It's a great record...

Man... "Dondante" is easily one of the most intense things I've ever heard.
Between "Gideon" and "steam Engine"...
They’ve got at least twenty absolute classics in their catalog.

Personally, I think MMJ, Bon Iver, and Fleet Foxes are all top-tier bands. Fleet Foxes have this incredible EP that sounds nothing like Bon Iver or MMJ. It’s pure hippie vibes—heavy harmonies that just melt your brain, essential oils, some kind of cosmic cowboy folk, and a sound that predates CSNY. It’s all about Mother Nature, sunshine, and that refined, trippy sort of magic. Maybe 🙂 would find it a bit much, but you really need to check out the EP they dropped before their first album. I honestly think Jacket is the best live act out there right now, and if they pull off what I'm hoping for with the new album, it’s going to be absolutely massive.

I'm feeling pretty wiped out—so I'm just chilling with some Okonokos...
That riff in "One Big Holiday" absolutely destroys me...

I actually scored mine on eBay a few months back.
The seller totally messed up—he didn't mention it was the '99 pressing—so I grabbed it since it's easily one of my all-time favorite MMJ albums. Plus, I had no clue they were doing this reissue on colored vinyl. Honestly, sometimes ignorance really is bliss.

I know. I've seen people on the MMJ forums saying this thing already hit insane prices on eBay, like $99.

these are easily my favorite MMJ albums.

I get where you're coming from, 🙂 but I'm just a sucker for all of them.

edit: though At Dawn is actually my top pick.

Tennessee Fire is definitely their most laid-back record—that’s probably why it hits home for me (not that I don't dig the others, far from it). It's pretty cool how it was recorded live, too; there's a certain vibe to it that the other albums just don't have, plus Heartbreakin man btw is better on that one 🙂
Btw, what's your take on the new album?
I struggled with it at first—I hadn't listened to Z in a while because I was stuck on that first record, so switching to the recent stuff was a total shock. But after a few spins, it really started to grow on me.

I was into it at first, but I have to admit I started losing interest pretty early on. That said, I think I’m finally ready to really dive in and give them my full attention.

It isn't even the questionable stuff that bothers me. It’s something I can't quite put my finger on yet. I know exactly how I felt when I first heard those first two tracks, and when IBM and Z dropped. I felt like a little kid. With their earlier stuff, it didn't hit me that way right away.

Here is my latest childish theory: maybe this band wasn't meant to become a massive stadium act. I'm afraid they've moved too far away from that specific sound that made them who they were. And if they tried to go back to it ten years from now, I wouldn't give them credit for it. Honestly.
