Windows XP or Windows Vista?

I have a quick question for the group.
Which operating system actually holds up better?
Windows XP or Windows Vista?
I've been hearing some chatter from certain circles suggesting that Vista isn't going to be anything to write home about.
And what’s the deal with games built for XP? Will they even run on Vista? I am well aware that the new DirectX 10 is significantly faster and more capable, but if I want to run Vista, I'm basically forced to go out and buy a whole new "beast" of a machine.
In all honesty, is upgrading to Vista even worth the headache?

Everything you need to do runs better and faster on Windows XP.

The facts:
Vista is already out there.
It’s being sold, but honestly, it’s barely moving, despite how much Microsoft tries to push it.
People just don't "like" Vista.
And drivers for Vista... that could turn into a long, painful headache.
If you want Aero, Vista demands at least 1GB of RAM, a decent processor, and a real graphics card.

I'm definitely not touching Windows Vista—not for me. I'd much rather stick with what I know alongside Roger Miller8. Honestly, why even bother with Vista when Windows XP runs perfectly without any headaches?
Vista feels way too new for my taste—plus, I just don't trust it quite yet... 🙂

I'm definitely sticking with Windows XP. Probably for a little while longer, at least, until I can finally upgrade to a beefier rig and everything else settles down... back when XP first dropped, I think I spent forever running on Windows 98. For now, I'm just waiting to see if they can actually polish up Windows Vista (maybe after a few more Service Packs come out) 😁

It’s gotta be Windows XP... seriously, I’ve got a few buddies who tried upgrading to Windows Vista and they ended up crawling back to XP sooner than you can blink!
People just love to complain that everything is broken!!!!! If you're really dying to see what all the fuss is about regarding those Vista features, just grab the old issue #173 of PC Magazine from the shelf, pop the DVD in, and go ahead and install it yourself! 👍

I was running Windows Vista on an AMD Sempron 2600+ with an ATI Radeon 9250+ and 512 Gigabytes of RAM, and honestly, it held up pretty well. Once I bumped the RAM up to 768 Gigabytes, it actually felt almost as snappy as Windows XP.

I feel like it’s just like when Windows XP first launched—half the hardware wouldn't even play nice with it, let alone the software! They probably patched those issues in Windows Vista, but I honestly don't think things will be running smoothly for at least another year... Anyway, I don't see much point in upgrading to Windows Vista unless you're really into the UI—because, as they say, it's "good looking."

I've always been used to Windows XP, but Windows Vista is definitely the superior choice. It offers a ton of features, including one I found particularly clever: using a USB Flash Drive as extra RAM...

I almost forgot to mention...
For Windows Vista to actually fit in with the rest of us, we're going to need at least a year. We need time to develop the software, the games, the hardware, and all that other junk specifically for Windows Vista...

I've been hearing that Windows Vista is pretty much useless right now. It’s nothing special, at least for the time being, until game devs and software companies actually optimize their stuff for Windows Vista and we get at least Service Pack 1. 😈

So, what actually happens when you start using a USB Flash Drive as extra RAM?

In my opinion, it won't help much. A thumb drive just can't keep up with the amount of memory Windows Vista devours.

On a PC with 2GB of RAM or more, you can really feel the impact of ReadyBoost.

Just grab a USB Flash Drive. Why not?

Aside from a handful of questionable new features, Windows Vista doesn't feel much more advanced than Windows XP.
All that interface eye candy is honestly overkill—it just drags down my system performance and causes constant stuttering here and there...
The settings that were so easy to find in Windows XP now seem scattered all over the place in Vista; some groupings make sense, while others are just plain nonsensical.
It makes for a pretty uncomfortable workflow...

By the way, I'm running a Dell Precision 380 with an Intel Dual Core 64, 2 Gigabytes of RAM, and an Nvidia FX 3450/4000 SDI professional Quadro card.

That should be plenty, but you really need a decent graphics card. I actually installed Windows Vista but kept XP around too. Honestly, I just messed around with Vista at first because I wasn't sure about it—so many people were trashing it, and half of them probably hadn't even tried it. But let me tell you, I don't even boot up XP anymore. All my essential programs work fine, and most importantly, Call of Duty 2 and Starcraft run perfectly.🙂

My setup is an AMD Athlon 3500+, 1GB of RAM, and an Nvidia 7300. Honestly, Windows Vista runs like a dream on this. I haven't run into a single hiccup yet.

I’ve been running Windows Vista on my laptop lately, and honestly? I’m loving it. It actually feels snappier than Windows XP on my beefy desktop setup, and all this nonsense claiming that XP is superior is just—well, it's pure nonsense. Sure, there are some bugs and those typical "growing pains" you see with any new OS, but Windows Vista keeps getting better and better with every single update. I'm jumping between both systems daily alongside Solaris, so I think I know a thing or two about what works.
