That’s actually another reason why I’m moving to NYC! It's not like it's the most important thing in life, I guess... but if I get really hyped about a song and they don't even get the lyrics, let alone why I'm feeling it so deeply, I end up feeling lonely and misunderstood. I'm a pretty emotional and romantic person, so I think that kind of disconnect just adds negativity to a relationship. It feels suffocating.
I really do love music, though...

Whatever. I once dated this guy who was obsessed with Kennedy. It didn't last. I can't deal with someone if we can't hit the same shows. We don't need the same taste in movies or books, but music is pretty much everything. If there's a chance we learn something from each other, cool. But if I'm moshing to The Clash and he's just standing there because he's all about R&B, it's over. Or vice versa... he starts quoting those Kennedy lyrics like they're deep, and it just makes my skin crawl.
So, yeah, they don't have to listen to the exact same stuff. They just have to vibe to the same things. Otherwise, I know they won't get me. Whatever.

I could never, ever be with a guy who doesn't listen to music even remotely similar to mine. Once upon a time—it was ages ago—I got tangled up with this cute little guy. I didn't know much about him at first, but he was sweet, honestly... then I went to his place for the first time and saw his shelf. There were three CDs sitting there: a 'house compilation', a Nina Badrić album, and some old extremist political anthems... I bolted out of there immediately. I was in total shock for days. Since then? No chance. I won't even look at someone unless they can name at least three Sonic Youth albums 😁

Man, I think it would’ve been way harder to sway me at 15 than it is now. Back then, I probably would've turned my nose up at any band where the singer didn't sound like they were screaming out of some hellish cavern while Satan was busy... well, you know—all while worshiping that same Satan, burning down churches on weekends, and feeling nothing but pure disdain for anyone even remotely religious.

I don't know, I've never really had much reason to think about stuff like that since it’s never happened to me... Of course they won't have my exact taste, but close enough—that's usually how it goes. 🙂 And honestly, it’s probably better if it stays that way. 😬

Music plays a vital role in my life, and while I consider myself quite open to various genres, there are certain things I simply cannot stand—the mindless trashy country hits, those manufactured local pop stars, and all that superficial crowd from MTV and similar outlets.
I truly love being able to share the same musical tastes with my boyfriend; there is something special about connecting over a shared passion and feeling the same way about a song...

If your taste in music is different, your whole vibe changes too... look, I’m sorry if I’m leaning into stereotypes here, but in my book, guys who only listen to country music usually dress 😢... at least most of them. Honestly, I feel like I'd have absolutely nothing to talk about with a guy like that. And since first impressions are mostly about how you look, there's just no way I'm being attracted to some dude walking around in a half-unbuttoned white shirt, wearing a heavy gold chain and a tacky signet ring.😳I don't want to sound like a total snob, but that's just the reality of it.

On the flip side (and I think someone already mentioned this), no two people ever have the exact same musical taste... but I really want us to be on the same page, roughly speaking. I live to talk about music and the bands I love, so it would be nice if he actually had a clue what I was talking about.
