Washington, D.C. is getting a brand-new film festival this fall! From September 21st to the 25th, the Student Union will be hosting a curated selection of the absolute best experimental short films and video art from around the globe. And the venue? It’s actually quite poetic—this brings the city back to its cinematic roots. Back in 1963, one of our very first major festivals, the Genre Film Festival (GEFF), kicked off right here at the Student Center, completely shifting how we perceive and experience film. The whole thing is named after "25 fps," a nod to the frames per second in the PAL video standard. It’s all being put together by the awesome audiovisual research group, 25 FPS.

You can grab all the specific details in just a few days once they drop on the official festival site www.25fps.hr.

Ugh.
We’re practically turning into Colombia at this rate. 😬

I honestly don't know if I'll ever have the time to hit all these festivals—maybe I should just quit my job and... well, no. Then there'd be one less taxpayer around to fund these whole things, wouldn't there? Anyway...😢 I can hardly wait. 👋

FILM FESTIVAL PROGRAM:

1. COMPETITION
— A showcase of works produced between January 2003 and June 2005. We’ve curated four distinct festival selections—each running about 70 minutes—featuring roughly 40 works in total. The lineup covers everything from classic experiments to intense image-and-sound synergies, plus some pretty radical genre, technical, and stylistic hybrids. Our expert jury will be handing out awards to the competing films, but hey, the audience gets to pick their own favorites too!

2. LECTURES
— Hrvoje Turković, American film theorist
topic: Pioneering experimental film and video art in America (1960s and 70s)
— Fred Camper, Chicago-based film theorist
topic: The state of amateurism in contemporary American avant-garde film
— Nicholas Schmerkin, French producer, distributor, and editor of "Repérages" magazine
topic: Short hybrid film distribution and its status in France and globally
During these lectures, our jury members will also present a selection of works they've personally chosen for the audience.

3. RETROSPECTIVES
— Early experimental film and video in America
curated by: Hrvoje Turković, American film theorist
— Selection of Japanese experimental film from the 60s and 70s
curated by: Keiji Aiuchi, filmmaker and professor at Waseda University in Japan
— A survey of recent Japanese film and video production from the 90s to today
curated by: Keiji Aiuchi, filmmaker and professor at Waseda University in Japan
— Selections from the lab competition at the Sundance Film Festival, the most famous and oldest short film festival
curated by: Calmin Borel, co-organizer of the Sundance Film Festival
