Anyone remember "Navigator"?

So, I was thinking about that old movie from New Zealand back in the 80s... you know, the one directed by Vincent Ward—yeah, the guy who did *What Dreams May Come*. Just kind of a random thought hitting me.🙄 I think I saw a bio for this on ABC like ten years ago... my memory is pretty fuzzy on the details. Honestly, whenever that movie pops into my head, I just can't wrap my brain around the absolute garbage the same director churned out afterward. That flick left such a heavy impression on me. I don't remember the plot perfectly because it’s definitely not your typical linear story—it actually gives off major Donnie Darko vibes. It’s possible that might have even influenced the guy who made Donnie Darko. If I recall, it’s set in medieval England during the height of the Plague. You've got these miners digging some kind of tunnel underground, and somehow they escape the Plague only to end up in New Zealand in the 20th century, stuck in some claustrophobic, industrial part of town just before dawn. There's this kid leading them around who has these visions about finding some massive cross and bringing it back to his village to save everyone from the sickness. Something like that. Yeah.
My memory's a little fuzzy on the specifics, but it definitely gives me major Donnie Darko vibes—just way more surreal and nonsensical. But man, that atmosphere... honestly, it’s easily the darkest movie I’ve ever sat through. It isn't just the trippy, dark plot either; the visuals are on another level. You can tell Vincent Ward really killed it there—it’s clearly his specialty. The whole thing is shot in black and white with this gritty, handheld camera feel that somehow perfectly ties together two different times and places. There's this one scene that's just burned into my brain: a bunch of miners huddling in a shaft, just waiting for the Plague to hit. Such a twisted concept, right? And then it actually happens—this skeleton flies across a massive full moon, blowing a trumpet while everything falls apart. Just incredible. Does anyone else remember this?
