How many MP3-cs do you have on your PC?

Look, I realize we’re living in the age of digital audio, and since we're basically an MP3 nation ourselves, I was curious to see how much of your hard drive space is being swallowed up by them. Give me a rough estimate in MB or GB if that's easier, or just tell me the actual file count.

I'm trying to figure out if MP3s are actually the primary culprit behind all that wasted disk space, or if something else is taking up more room.

I’m hovering somewhere between 1 and 5 GB. Most of my music is still on CDs, so I just collect new tracks on the drive until I hit about 700 MB, then burn a new one. The rest? It fluctuates—maybe 2 or 3 GB—of older stuff I rotate through every ten days or so. I’ve got about 25 full CDs all cataloged. Once I get bored of what’s currently playing, I just pull up WhereIsIt, find some fresh tracks, wipe the old ones, and call it a day.

Between 5 and 15

Once I hit the 700 MB mark, I burn them, but they're still sitting on my PC for now. Just in case!

My hard drive is pretty small—so I don't really keep any mp3-a files stored locally on my computer—I just stream them directly into Winamp from the web 🙂

Now I'm actually too embarrassed to even say how much I have!

Whether it’s worth it or not... I’ve got about 70GB sitting on my HDD, but this month I am definitely done with DVDs.🙂

I’ve got about 6 or 7 DVDs and maybe ten regular CDs lying around.
As for my computer, I only keep a little bit on there since I'm constantly swapping things out.

All my music is on the computer anyway. It's just some 25GB chunk of data, so it’s not like it creates any real issues. Movies are what actually eat up the space much more quickly.

Whenever I actually get a decent chance to sit down and compile something, I usually just go ahead and burn it straight to a CD. Though, I guess these days I could probably just as easily use a DVD.

Then my C drive got wiped 😁

I carved out a dedicated 20GB partition specifically for my MP3 collection... I've already burned through 13GB of it.
That's 2,882 MP3 tracks😁

Movies are taking up way too much space on my HDD

It’s roughly 55 GB—all high-quality metal.

It appears history is repeating itself; once again, we find ourselves facing that classic computing analogy.

There was a time when hundreds of MP3 files would eat up a significant chunk of our HDD space, but nowadays, capacities have grown so massive that only the most obsessive music collectors could even come close to filling half of them. That historical pattern isn't playing out with MP3 files anymore, though—it's happening with movies. We have much larger HDD units now, sure, but the file sizes have ballooned right along with them.
I expect that in just a few years, we’ll be hoarding movies the same way we currently hoard MP3 files—stashing hundreds of titles on a single HDD, and eventually putting together movie compilations on DVDs, much like how people make MP3 collections on CDs today.

The reality remains that MP3 files are the primary culprits for hogging hard drive space, though movies are an even bigger threat. As for me, I still don't actually have as many gigabytes of movies stored away as I do my MP3 collection...

I don't usually keep music sitting on my computer—just whatever I'm vibing to right now or some fresh tracks I just grabbed while waiting to burn a CD.
Honestly, I've barely got 4-5 GB of music total, so even a massive 200GB HDD wouldn't be enough if I was trying to store all my movies...

I've got maybe a couple of gigs sitting there, and like 80% of it is just waiting to be burned onto CDs. I actually listen to maybe 800 MB at most...
