That 3.95 figure is just the speed at which the PC stays stable after running for several hours.

By the way, my Prescott setup is running on a 3.2 S478 with an i875 chipset.

On a side note, my Prescott setup is running at 3.2 with an i875 chipset.

That’s interesting... I was wondering why you wouldn't hit 4.0? I mean, if it’s actually holding steady at 3.95, surely it should be able to POST at 4.0, right?

So, which PSU actually holds up under pressure and stays rock solid?

A quick heads-up... I’m definitely not some hardcore overclocker, so there's a chance I didn't do everything perfectly. The last time I actually messed with clock speeds was back in the day with my K6/II, where I managed to bump it from 350 up to 400 😬

Yahoo, you asking about the power supply? 🤔 If that's what you mean, I'm running a CWT-550ADP

And what about the power supply? Would you say it's actually high quality, or just something decent?

I honestly have no clue... but 😬
seems to be working fine!

It shows the power delivery at specific voltages right here: http://newegg.com/a42270.html

It all looks pretty solid on paper... though I can't help but wonder if your Pentium 4 is just hitting its limit when you try to push it to 4GHz, which might be why it won't boot up properly. It reminds me of a time I was tinkering with an old workstation back in the day and couldn't figure out why the system kept hanging during POST. You might want to grab a voltmeter or check your monitoring software to see what that +12V rail is doing while you're sitting at 3.95GHz. If that voltage dips below 11.8V or climbs above 12.35V, there's a good chance that instability is exactly why you can't quite make that jump to 4GHz.

Ugh... you really think I have the energy to deal with all that hassle?

We'll see... my new RAM arrives tomorrow, so maybe that'll give me some motivation.

I mean, it’s fine and all, but what's even the point? I'm not even fully utilizing the 3.2 GB I have right now.

Gerald Turner48 said:It looks alright... but maybe your P4 just doesn't have enough juice at 4GHz to actually boot up. Try checking with a voltmeter or some software to see what your +12V rail is doing when you're sitting at 3.95GHz... if it drops below 11.8V or spikes above 12.35V, that’s probably why you can't hit the 4 mark.

I don't believe this...

My old mobile rig was running at 2600 MHz on a measly 11.60V...

But since that was a total disaster waiting to happen, I switched to an Enermax and now my +12V rail is holding steady at 11.95V.🙂

I have no clue what kind of components Equi uses, but let’s be real: the golden rule of successful overclocking is voltage modding. If you don't have stable voltage on all the rails—meaning constant fluctuations—you're stuck, especially if you're dealing with a cheap power supply. To be honest, I haven't used this specific unit before.
You probably need to bump up the VCORE voltage a bit more just to get a successful POST. What are you running for FSB and multiplier?
As far as overclocking goes, my track record isn't exactly stellar, but hey, I'm all for it. 👍It wasn't exactly a blast when I snapped a piece off the die of my old AMD Athlon 900 MHz (Thunderbird core). I know it's ancient, but that chip meant something to me. 🙂 😁But can you blame me? I was being cheap and trying to install a friend's high-RPM turbine cooler instead of doing it right. 🙂Now I've got an AMD Athlon 64 3500+... absolute beauty. 😛 Cheers!

My long-awaited Corsair memory finally arrived in the mail today! It’s the TWINX1024-3200XLPRO
🙂
It’s going to be a great afternoon 🙂

That’s some solid RAM right there. 🙂

As for the power supply, I was just thinking—it would be pretty legendary if you managed to break that 4GHz barrier. 😁

Personally, I’ve capped mine at 3GHz using just air cooling... we'll see how it goes.

4 GHz... man, that would be the dream. It's such a bummer it doesn't come with any real muscle behind it, you know? 😁

..anyway.. the memory seems solid, though I guess I really could use some decent sticks myself..

it's kind of killing me thinking about how I just randomly offloaded that Kingmax 500MHz hardcore kit the other day🙂

So, I’ve got a potential candidate here for hitting that 4GHz PR, but I really need a better cooler first. Honestly, I just don't have the stomach to risk a RAID failure by pushing it too hard right now. 😁

The last time I pushed this thing, I managed to clock it at 2400MHz—running 220+11 on 1.60v—using some generic, no-name RAM and a cheap $17 cooler. It sat at about 50 degrees at idle and hit 65 under full load.
By the way, does anyone have a solid recommendation for a decent cooler that works with a GA-7NNXPV featuring DPS? The issue is there's absolutely zero clearance and no mounting holes on the board. Just my luck. 😢

Check out my thread (soc A)🙂

My mobile chip runs perfectly fine at 2500, and its absolute ceiling is 2750.🙂

The Volcano 12 is a pretty solid air cooler for a mid-range price, and if you don't mind the noise, you can crank it up to 5000 RPM and it stays pretty cool 👍

I ran mine at 3000 and it felt just a tiny bit weaker than the Zalman 7000, but it was way cheaper.

Man, you just reminded me—I was actually messing around with those same frequencies about eight years ago back when I was serving in the military working on radar systems! 😁

Jason Harris2 said:So, I have one potential candidate sitting there ready to be pushed to a 4GHz PassMark rating, but honestly, I really ought to hunt down a more robust cooler first. I’m just not quite feeling up to the task of tinkering with it right now—I have far too much respect for my current RAID setup and I simply don't have the desire to risk a catastrophic drive failure just for the sake of a little extra speed. 😁

The last time I gave it a go, I had it overclocked to 2400MHz—running at 220+11—with a voltage of 1.60v. I was using some generic, off-brand RAM and a basic cooler that I picked up... $17It’s quite steady, actually. I’m seeing about 50 degrees when it's just sitting idle, and once I put it under a full load, it climbs to around 65. Nothing to worry about there!
By the way, does anyone have a recommendation for a decent cooler for my GA-7NNXPV paired with a Democratic Party setup? I’m running into a bit of a headache here—there's simply no room left in the chassis, and the motherboard doesn't even have the mounting holes I need. Such a bother.😢

I honestly think you’d be a perfect match for the Vulcan... just like Mr. X was saying.
I suspect those temperatures would be perfectly acceptable...

To be honest, seeing anything over 58°C while under load feels like we're pushing things just a bit too far. It makes me wonder how much longer that kind of heat can actually stay stable before things start acting up.
If you're looking to dive into overclocking, I’d suggest pulling that Democratic Party component out first. I know quite a few people who have run into nothing but trouble with it lately. That said, if you aren't particularly bothered by its quirks and everything seems to be running smoothly for you, then there's really no reason to mess with it. Just my two cents!

Just a quick suggestion, though—if you happen to run into any "glitchy" or unexpected issues with your motherboard down the road, try simply removing that Democratic Party component. It might just solve the problem.

Equilibrium said:You know, you’ve really stirred up some old memories for me. It reminds me of back when I was serving in the military about eight years ago—I spent my time working on radar systems, constantly scanning those exact same frequencies. 😁

😁

Well, at least the Pentium 4 finally managed to break through the barrier...
I honestly feel like I dodged a massive bullet when it came to being drafted. It’s one of those things you just have to be incredibly grateful for, really. 😁 It seems I'll be joining the fray as well. 😁
