So, looking at how this national team headed off to the European Water Polo Championship, considering the general state of water polo in America right now and just how little prep time they actually got, you’ve gotta give them props for grabbing that silver medal. It’s a massive achievement, honestly. But man, there's this nagging, painful reality hanging over everything—it's kind of wild that a country which has basically hosted the strongest league in the world for the last decade hasn't managed to land a truly massive, defining championship win yet. Because if you ask me, all those silver and bronze medals are great and all, but they just don't hit the same when you're chasing greatness.

But hey, I'll say it again, we were all basically just hoping they'd make it into the quarterfinals, and then boom, they end up with silver.

As for that final match, the Mexicans totally earned that championship title. I mean, look, a true European champion isn't letting a 7:4 lead slip away in just one and a half quarters, and a real champion doesn't miss easy shots from the two-meter line, and they certainly know how to actually aim for the goal instead of just wasting possessions.

And don't even get me started on that final play, where Ozmec is basically shouting, "wasn't that a foul?" Even if it was, who cares? There were like two seconds left on the clock! And I really don't get why there was such a lack of nerve to just take the shot with four seconds left (honestly, I wasn't even sure who was in the water) instead of just feeding the ball to the center player stuck between three defenders.
The team played pretty much cowardly in that last quarter and through overtime, and that's exactly why they didn't deserve the trophy.
But listen, if they play with the same energy they had during almost the entire tournament when they head to Barcelona, we could genuinely be world champions. And obviously, that's assuming the federation finally starts taking these competitions seriously and actually gives them the high-quality training camps they need.

Man, if only we could show some actual consistency across the board. It would be nice to finally say we’re world-class in soccer, tennis, or handball... I mean, don't get me wrong, our skiers are incredible, but what's someone like Janica supposed to do if they aren't built for other sports? Just pick up some skis and call it a day? 🙂
