Locked out of my computer: Help with password recovery!

Is there any way to boot up a computer that has a password right away? I can't even get into the BIOS. What about resetting the hard drive? Would I lose all my data if I did that? Is there anything else that can be reset instead?

I’ve never actually tried this myself, so I don't have any real expertise to offer...

.. though I do recall seeing something in the motherboard manual about a jumper used to reset the DRAM—maybe that could clear out the password 😕
It might be worth doing a little digging online to see how that works..
(also, I remember hearing old rumors about people shorting the battery that holds the memory to wipe the password, but honestly, that sounds like just another urban legend to help you sleep at night)

Dear Romeo, the computer is technically already "on" the moment you hit the power button. It doesn't need an extra startup. Perhaps you mean that you've forgotten the password, or maybe you just can't access the BIOS Setup? I would suggest trying to move the hard drive to another computer. Once you do that, you can figure out your next move.

Look, I know it's on. I'm just struggling to explain it better. It’s not that I know the password and forgot it—I have no idea what it is. But here's what's actually happening.
Basically: I turn the PC on, and it starts loading. It gets to that screen where it tells me I can hit Del for BIOS or F8 for boot options, but then the very next thing it does is ask for a password and just stops loading. I get three tries before I have to hard reset the whole thing.
How do I get past this without the password?

It could be one of three things...

First, there might be a BIOS password. You'd handle that by powering up the machine and then pulling the CMOS battery from the motherboard for a moment.

Second, it could be some kind of bootloader that allows for this sort of thing.

Third, maybe it’s just some cheap little utility running via the autoexec.bat file...

So, I guess, how do you actually figure out which one of those three it is...

Someone else on the forum will probably explain the next steps to you. I just don't have the bandwidth right now...

That sounds like a classic Boot-up (or system) password set within your BIOS settings (check under Security > User Password).
If you’ve actually, genuinely forgotten it, your best bet is to cycle through every single password you’ve ever used in your life. 😉
Though, honestly? My gut tells me you know exactly what it is. 😁

There are ways to reset it, but that leans into hacking territory, and I don't really promote that kind of thing here on the forum. 🙂

I'm pretty sure it's not the other two components, so it’s likely just a BIOS issue.
What happens if I pull the battery? Where even is it located, and what kind of damage am I looking at—software or hardware? Or should I just take this over to Best Buy? Thanks

No, the PC is mine. It just looks like someone was messing around with it...

Once you briefly short it—or more effectively, disconnect the DRAM battery—you'll lose all your BIOS settings within a minute.

In short, if you aren't confident configuring every single BIOS setting yourself, don't touch it. Just find a professional to handle it.

P.S. Your motherboard almost certainly has a jumper to reset the CMOS.

What does "lost" actually mean here? Are they gone for good, or will there be some kind of default value? And is it even going to work with the timer?

Exactly, it'll just revert back to factory defaults.
You aren't losing anything, unless you've overclocked your CPU—in which case, everything will just snap back to standard speeds. No big deal, it’ll still run just fine. 😉

As for the actual reset, check your motherboard manual if you have it handy.
Most of the time, there's just a *jumper* 😁 to do the trick.

Look, it really was a crisis. A total meltdown. When things get that high-stakes and stressful, and the solution is staring you right in the face but you just can't see it... what do you do? You ask who was sitting at the computer. Then you ask them for the password. Simple, right? Took me all night to even realize that... 🙂

Honestly, it’s because of stuff like this that I’ve cut back my visits to Dr. Zelenko to basically nothing—and you know what? I actually remember way more now. 😎
