I was watching some highlights late last night, and it got me thinking about the weird, liminal space that pre-season occupies in our lives as fans. You know the drill. The weather is finally starting to turn, the summer heat is breaking, and suddenly, these massive, high-budget spectacles start popping up on our screens. We sit there with our coffee or a beer, watching players who might not even be on the roster by August, playing matches that technically "don't count" for anything in the official standings.

There is something inherently surreal about it. On one hand, you have these world-class athletes, some of whom are brand new faces we’ve never even heard of, playing with a level of intensity that feels almost disproportionate to the stakes. You see these guys sprinting, sliding, and celebrating goals like it’s a cup final, even though we all know that if they lose, nobody is going to write a scathing editorial about it in the morning papers. It’s this strange hybrid of high-stakes performance and low-stakes reality.

I find myself oscillating between two moods whenever these exhibition tours happen. One part of me is genuinely excited. I love the "fresh start" energy. There’s a specific kind of magic in seeing a new signing step onto the pitch for the first time. You don't know their history, you don't know their quirks, and you’re just watching them try to find their footing in a new system. It’s like watching a first date; there's all this nervous energy and a desperate desire to make a good impression. You're looking for those tiny sparks—a specific way a player moves, a glimpse of chemistry between two people who haven't even shared a locker room yet. It’s pure, unadulterated potential.

But then, the cynical side of me kicks in. I start looking at the scorelines—the wild, high-scoring affairs where defenses look like they’ve never met before—and I wonder how much of it is actually "football." Is it even the same sport when the tactical discipline is thrown out the window in favor of fitness conditioning and experimental lineups? Sometimes it feels less like a professional sporting event and more like a glorified training drill that we're being sold as "entertainment." We see these massive scores, these chaotic back-and-forth battles, and while they're fun to watch, they almost feel like they’re stripping away the strategic soul of the game.

I remember a few years back, I stayed up way too late to watch a friendly involving a massive club traveling halfway across the world. The game was a complete mess—goals flying in every five minutes—and by the end, I felt this weird sense of emptiness. I had invested two hours of my life into something that felt entirely inconsequential. It felt like watching a movie trailer that was longer than the actual film.

And yet, we keep coming back. We keep watching because we want to believe in the hype. We want to see that one player who looks like they’re going to be a superstar. We want to see if a new manager's philosophy actually translates to the pitch, even if it’s just for ninety minutes in a stadium half-empty of locals but full of die-hard traveling supporters. It's the hope that kills you, right? The hope that this little summer skirmish is a harbinger of a championship run.

Is it just me, or does the "friendly" label actually make the tension harder to handle? When the stakes are zero, why does a single moment of brilliance or a glaring defensive error still feel like it matters so much to us?

Do you guys actually enjoy the pre-season grind, or do you treat it as a necessary evil just to kill time until the real season starts?
