Plane (2023)

So, I just finished watching "Plane."

It’s an American action flick starring Gerald Butler.

The setup: Gerald plays this middle-aged pilot who deals with a major mechanical failure while flying over the ocean.
He ends up forced to make an emergency landing on some remote island near the Philippines—which, naturally, is controlled by some nasty guerrillas.
The rebels take the crew and passengers hostage, so Gerald has to step up and save everyone with the help of a convict he meets along the way.
Expect plenty of brawls and shootouts.

It feels like a bit of Ramb 2 mixed with Die Hard—sort of a low-budget version of Tom Hanks in one of his action roles.

The movie doesn't try to be anything it isn't; it’s straightforward, unpretentious, easy to watch, and honestly, pretty well-executed.
All in all, it’s a solid, entertaining flick. 👍

airplane. Is this actually happening? I think this might be the first time we've seen Gerald Butler play a Scot. For the most part, it was a decent enough watch. The film actually maintains some semblance of structure—it’s got a beginning, a middle, and an end, which is more than I can say for many others. However, there's a certain predictability to it; you pretty much know the ending before you're halfway through. It doesn't offer much in the way of twists or depth; everything remains rather shallow and strictly linear.

It’s basically just a straightforward, decent little thriller where the director manages to smooth over most of those secondary flaws with some pretty snappy pacing. Honestly, Gerald Butler is a perfect fit for this kind of role; he carries the whole thing on his back effortlessly.

Every Black guy in this movie is bald as hell, like a bunch of billiard balls rolling around.

If it were up to me, I would've cranked up the heat at the end and thrown in some intense, steamy action right there in the belly of the plane.
(Bonnie, the flight attendant, looked like she was ready to get down and dirty) 🙂

Look, you don't need "extra" plot points—the plot *is* the point.
It's what it is.
It kind of transported me back to the 80s—you know, that era of lean, mean action flicks designed purely to give you a quick, digestible hit of adrenaline.
Back around 1985, this would have been a massive blockbuster. Nowadays, it's just a minor flick, but honestly, because it doesn't try to be anything more than what it is, it actually works.

I will say, by the end, I found myself wishing they'd tacked on maybe ten more minutes of gunfire or at least one more fistfight.

But, like my old man used to say, you should always leave a little room at the table.
Moderation is key. A little bit, but make it count.

This is exactly why people watch movies like this.

I was actually surprised by how packed the theater was. This movie is straight-up B-movie trash.🤣

It isn't trash at all.

The only thing I struggled to wrap my head around was how those five commandos managed to take out 20 or 30 soldiers. If my memory serves me right, only one of the commandos actually took a hit.

That was my take on it. I had a blast watching them. Those guys are actual commandos, unlike these local amateurs who don't have a clue how warfare actually works. ☕

The absolute peak for me is that scene where the specialist pulls out the big rifle and starts picking off the bad guys through the cars. Man, I really miss those kinds of high-octane moments.
And then there’s that part right after, where Gerard is basically piloting an airplane with one wheel and takes out the main villain. Just legendary.

I’m just picturing him ditching the flight suit for that brown combat shirt, and then boom—in the next scene, he’s already soaked through at the collar.🙂

It’s manageable, I suppose. Given how much ammunition they have on hand, does it really not occur to anyone to aim for the tires and just disable the vehicles?

It’s not exactly high-octane action, even if there is some shooting. Just pure drama. Typical low-budget Butler style.

if I may indulge in a bit of spoiling (though let's be honest, who hasn't seen Top Gun: Maverick by now?😁)
where Tammy hijacks a Lockheed Martin jet from some unidentified nation🙄
and during takeoff, clips a vehicle with the nose gear, losing the wheel entirely
yet, naturally, that doesn't hinder the successful completion of the mission in the slightest.
Similarly, neither Butler nor anyone else even glances at the poor soul who gets crushed by his massive😍 landing gear

I honestly can’t remember a movie where the interaction with the main villain was that short. It was pretty mediocre and just plain boring—well, I wanted to say it was the absolute worst thing I've seen all year, but then I watched Fast 9, so let's not get carried away. At least his scenes with the President had some actual tension to them.

Decent enough for a movie night. Butler is one of those actors who plays every role with the exact same energy—but hey, he does it well enough to land the lead every single time.

Nothing crazy to report, but definitely worth a look if you have some downtime. It’s mostly stuff you’ve probably seen before, but I don't feel like I wasted my time checking out

I suppose they decided to revisit Greenland ii just to keep the franchise breathing? Honestly, that first one felt like such a waste of time. Now, Plane is actually quite a bit better by comparison. It isn't exactly groundbreaking, but I guess it’s a decent enough action flick if you have two hours to kill, nothing more and nothing less. We’ve been subjected to far worse action movies lately, whether from Butler or anyone else, it seems. Maybe a 6.5/10, though I could see it hitting a 7 if you're really in the mood for that sort of thing.
