Quick question: I’m currently running an Nvidia RTX 3060 paired with an Intel Core i5-8600K at 3.60GHz on an AsRock Z370 Pro4 motherboard. I picked up the GPU earlier this year, unfortunately right when prices were hitting the ceiling. Anyway, the main issue is that when I try to play Call of Duty, I get constant stuttering. My FPS drops from about 100 down to 80, which just kills the experience. I have a gut feeling the processor is the bottleneck here. What CPU and motherboard combo would you guys recommend? Would an upgrade actually make a difference? This i5-8600K was solid once, but it feels like it's choking my graphics card now. Also, can I reuse my RAM? It's Corsair Vengeance 2x 8GB. CPU-Z shows a DRAM frequency of 1600 MHz and a Clock Speed of 4000 MHz.

p.s. I was looking at the Intel Core i5-12600K—would that be a decent upgrade considering my current GPU? Thanks.

Nah, it’s not the CPU.
Running at 1080p on minimum settings with an Nvidia RTX 3060 and an i9-13900K, you should be seeing 1% lows around 80 FPS.

What settings are you actually running, and what’s your monitor's refresh rate? You shouldn't feel those 80 FPS drops too much, though they might dip even lower.

To get the most out of that graphics card, you’d really be looking at an Intel Core i5-12600K or maybe an AMD Ryzen 5 5600 paired with a decent B660 or B650 motherboard.
I was actually crunching some numbers for my own build just a few days ago, and according to the benchmarks, if you go with a weaker processor, you definitely see those FPS drops and much worse 1% lows.

Regarding your i5 8600k—look, it’s still a capable chip, but let’s be honest, it’s an older generation. You can really feel the aging architecture in modern titles, and I’d bet that’s exactly why you’re running into stuttering issues. (Your current motherboard can actually handle RAM speeds over 4000MHz with some overclocking, but since your CPU caps out at 2666MHz, that's creating a bit of a bottleneck right there). As long as your RAM is hitting 3200MHz or higher, it's worth keeping. Beyond that, what kind of storage are we talking about—HDD or SSD? And how's your internet connection looking? Are you on a hardwired Ethernet setup or using Wi-Fi?

Here’s my CPU-Z info... I've got this nagging feeling like my system is stuttering. Every time I land from the plane and start moving toward buildings or anything else, the FPS tanks. It just dropped to 65, then jumps back to 100 depending on where I am on the map. If there are houses nearby, the FPS drops. On Caldera—which was a decent map—I was hitting a steady 100, though it dipped occasionally too. I was planning on picking up that Intel Core i5-12600K and a motherboard

The current RAM should be fine since it's 2 x 8 GB, but would upgrading help me hit a stable 110-130 FPS? I'm not asking for a locked 144, just something smooth enough to actually play. I followed one of those competitive guides on YouTube and set everything to low, but it still stutters. Any suggestions are welcome; my budget is capped at $1000

p.s. I'm running a 240 or 250 GB Dell Monitor SSD

It's fiber optic via an Ethernet cable.

That’s a solid choice on the CPU and motherboard; you can definitely stick with your current 3200MHz RAM.

With that graphics card paired with an i5 8600k, you really should be seeing a steady 100+ FPS on low settings without breaking a sweat. Since you aren't hitting those numbers, something is definitely throttling your performance or causing issues somewhere along the line.

Most guides you find online are pretty generic, and honestly, it's always a bit hit-or-miss whether the advice actually applies to your specific setup. From what I've noticed in most tutorials, they suggest using low settings and enabling Texture Streaming—which pulls better textures and colors from the server while you play. That can eat up an extra 24GB of space, so if your SSD is already pushing its limit—especially if your macOS is sitting right on top of it—that could be exactly why your FPS drops whenever you approach large buildings.

Are you running just that 240GB SSD, or do you have an HDD in the mix too?

Online guides are pretty generic, and half the time you don't even know if the person writing them knows what they're talking about. Most of these guides suggest dropping everything to low settings and enabling Texture Streaming—which pulls better textures and colors from the server while you play. It eats up maybe 24GB of extra space. That might be why your frames tank when you approach buildings, especially since your SSD is likely pushing its limit, especially if Windows is sitting on it too.

I've got an HDD, but CoD Warzone is installed specifically on the SSD. There was an update yesterday, so today the game is actually running smooth, between 90 and 115 FPS. I was planning a hardware upgrade anyway, so I'll either wait a bit longer or just pull the trigger on this CPU and motherboard combo and keep my old RAM. Thanks for the help, everyone. Best regards.
