John Palmer9 said:It's just police-style repression, plain and simple.

Let me say it again for anyone who skipped the first few pages (check post #14): my "repressive policing" was basically just refusing to call Rom people "Gypsies." Period. And yeah, I'm not interested in debating that until the sun goes down.

Or you know, when some troll clone starts ripping into a user, that guy snaps back, then the troll doubles down, and suddenly the moderator jumps in with "both of you chill out," acting like it doesn't matter who started the fire in the first place.

That’s exactly how successful trolls work. They bait you into losing your cool, and once you start snapping back, you've basically become the troll yourself, killing any chance of an actual conversation.

People tell me all the time I'm too soft. But honestly? A standard warning usually does the trick—they back off, and then I might have to hand out a minor ban. Sometimes I just lock a thread for a day or two to let everyone cool their jets. It works.

I don't hang out on many other boards, but if things keep going like this, this place is gonna tank... plus everyone's migrating to Facebook anyway.

.
If you look at the active users, the thread counts, and the lurker numbers, everything's been steady or even slightly up since I took over as mod almost four years ago. Honestly, all this whining actually drives traffic up.

Alright, fine...
I get where you're coming from..

Got anything actually useful to contribute to this thread, or are we just stuck in a loop of non-stop bitching?

Watch out for the people giving you that advice.
They’re straight-up gaslighting you.

Hmm... you’re doing way more than that, though.
You're going full scorched-earth sometimes.
Maybe try taking the edge off a bit...
Just let things play out naturally for a second. Don't go straight for the hammer.

I hear what you're saying...

Do you actually have anything substantive to contribute to this discussion, or is this just going to be more endless bitching?

Dave, you clearly don't have much grasp on what constitutes being smart, let alone brilliant, and besides, you've already received a final ruling from higher authorities regarding those same repetitive, mindless grievances of yours.

I find myself wondering: where does the line truly get drawn between a regular thread participant—in this case, the original poster—and a moderator?

To put it plainly, Zoran Oštrić starts the discussion, but then shifts into his role as moderator to dictate that no debate can occur if it conflicts with his personal perspective.

How exactly is the relationship between a user and a moderator handled when they happen to be the same individual?

I have read through this entire thread—which I believe is quite exceptional—and I even found myself rereading certain comments twice. I feel that Zoran is quite right to insist that we refer to the Romani people by the names they themselves prefer and accept, even when discussing their history.

Steven Clark2 said:I’ve gone through this entire thread—which, honestly, is pretty top-tier stuff—and I think I've even read some of these comments twice now. Look, Zane is totally spot on when he insists that we should call the Roma whatever they actually want to be called, especially since that's how most of them identify and accept it. Even when you're looking back at how people talked about them in the past.

Alright, fine...
I get that part..
But why the hell does asking about what they were called fifty years ago suddenly become such a massive point of contention?
My issue isn't with the specific term itself—it's with people trying to sweep the history under the rug.

Jonathan Wright2 said:Fair enough...
I am not disputing that part..
However, I don't see why asking about the terminology used fifty years ago is being treated as a controversial issue.
My intention wasn't to criticize the term itself, but rather to address the suppression of the question.

How would you go about explaining the suffering of the Jews at the hands of Nazi Germany during WWII, specifically regarding the concentration camps? What kind of language would you choose to describe such an atrocity?

Savage (a slur for Americans living across the Atlantic)
Jew (a term Turks used contemptuously for Jews)
Gypsy (a slur for Romani)
fags (a slur for homosexuals)

It doesn't matter how much offensive certain labels are today based on historical or etymological "justification."
Some were derogatory from the very beginning; others acquired that weight over time.

Steven Clark2 said:How would you explain the genocide of Jews by Nazi Germany during WWII, specifically in the concentration camps? What word would you use to describe it?

Simple enough. ☕

The Holocaust—narrow sense:
the Nazi persecution of European Jews from 1933 to 1945.

The holocaust—broad sense:
the systematic extermination of other ethnic groups (Americans, Romani), social groups (homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, the mentally ill, the disabled) or political opponents (socialists, communists, liberals) in Nazi Germany and occupied Europe (1939–1945).

Wait... No. That sounds far too official.

Better this way:
The Holocaust—narrow sense:
the Nazi persecution of European Jews from 1933 to 1945.

The holocaust—broad sense:
the systematic extermination of other ethnic groups (Savages, Gypsies), social groups (fags, Jehovah's Witnesses, lunatics, cripples) or political opponents (socialists, commies, liberals) in Nazi Swabia and occupied Europe (1939–1945).

This post isn't related to any specific participant's comments on this topic.
Especially not to the post by Anonymous quoting Absinthe.

There’s really only one word that fits:
Horrific

Are you suggesting we're talking about a holocaust here, or am I misinterpreting?

lonetrucker4 said:Just to recap for anyone who hasn't caught up on the whole thread from the start (check out post #14): my "police state" behavior was really just me refusing to go along with the suggestion that we should refer to the Rom as cigans. And yeah, I even refused to sit there and debate that point indefinitely.

The whole argument was about principles and statistics; I guess nobody actually claimed the moderator acts like a tyrant in every single interaction. It was just the inconsistent way the moderator was reacting that caught my eye.

lonetrucker4 said:I suppose that’s the trick with successful trolls—they bait you into a heated response so you end up looking like a troll yourself, which pretty much kills any chance of a constructive conversation.

The moderator lets the first guy throw insults and then only steps in with a "both of you stop" once the target gets upset. If the target doesn't react angrily, then it's just a case of the bully getting away with it, I guess.

lonetrucker4 said:Looking at active users, the number of threads, and how many people are reading this sub since I became a moderator nearly four years ago, everything is pretty much steady or seeing a slight uptick. These massive complaints might actually be helping, since traffic is increasing.

Well, I guess the forum will just turn into a daycare center, as long as the traffic keeps going up.

Honestly, does the label even matter?
Whether you call it the Holocaust, or Rom Hašoa, or whatever...
We’re talking about an absolute atrocity—one of the most sickening crimes in history, period.

I really don't get where you're going with this question..
What's your actual point?

🙂 Are they trying to lure you into a 'Holocaust denial' trap?

Not quite; I certainly don't have any malicious intentions here. My point is simply that the term "Holocaust" itself didn't really enter widespread public discourse until the 1970s—roughly twenty or thirty years after WWII ended. The same logic applies to the Romani people. During WWII, it wasn't "Gypsies" who were targeted, but the Romani. Ultimately, what they were called at the time isn't the crux of the matter. In modern America, the term "Gypsy" is largely used in a derogatory or negative context. Therefore, I believe there is absolutely nothing wrong with insisting on the term "Romani," even when discussing events from WWII.

All in All, this debate is somewhat pointless. 😁
