It’s not always that simple, though. Take the case of Damir Fintić, who was actually convicted because of an anonymous comment posted on his own blog:

http://nytimes.com/news/example-blog-case.html

He didn't end up behind bars—the Supreme Court eventually overturned that part—but he still had to pay the fine.

The whole reasoning behind the ruling was that since Fintić is just the "owner" of the blog, he doesn't really have total control over what anonymous users post, which is a fair point. In the US, this entire area of law is such a massive gray zone.

Honestly, I couldn't care less about these rules that some of these users on Reddit are using just to act like little snitches.

Look, let's be real here—it's not like anyone was actually forcing anyone to do anything. Terms of Use Honestly, I have to wonder—what exactly do you think you’re agreeing to when you click that registration button? Does anyone actually bother to read those endless walls of legalese, or are we all just blindly signing our lives away to the digital void? What kind of terms and conditions are we really consenting to here?
Are you seriously suggesting that you’re also expected to play by all these regulations? Rules....
You can actually step up and help out too by reporting any posts you think the moderators really need to jump on through the usual channels. Direct messages....or you can just use that automatic post submission feature—you know, the one where you just click on the thumbnail? Which one is on every single post?

Look, it’s not like anyone forced anyone to live in America and follow American laws, either. That’s my point. 😉

Susan Price30 said:But the question remains: why would you—or anyone else—warn a user about something like that unless you were trolling or, at the very least, going off-topic? By doing so, you're essentially breaking the rules of discussion by default.

Unless someone isn't just some troll, right? In that case, it’s actually a godsend... basically just a heads-up or a warning, which you see used all the time on certain subreddits anyway.Well, I guess I'll be reporting you to the moderator for that entry. If things had been even a little bit more pathetic—I am going to report you to the police for that post.

So, what happens next? Theoretically, someone could be charged with "wasting police resources," though I honestly wonder if the police would even take a baseless report seriously—especially when it's coming from the same person over and over again. In that case, I don't think they'd pay much attention at all.

Of course, we’re still seeing those "non-right-wing" opinions and links being circulated. He can go right ahead and call them communists or whatever else he wants. It clearly doesn't bother our little guy one bit. He hasn't made it onto the unheralded censor's blacklist on Reddit yet, but who knows when that might happen?

Do you have any examples where that actually works without getting completely rejected? Let me think... yeah, absolutely nowhere. 😁

It's so I can stop others from reacting the exact same way. I don't want people blowing up over nothing. Or, you know, having them lose their minds and head out to some Small town in the Midwest because of one crazy person.

Nobody actually wants these people around, yet they somehow manage to push their way into every single space, constantly insisting that they have some kind of fundamental right to be there.

Don't try to hide behind the admins or the owner... 😉

So, how exactly should we label your own posts then?

Since you're attributing someone else's quote about "paid" rallies to me...

And what kind of "idiotic and moronic" support would a kid like me even offer?

It would just ruin your "highly intelligent" crusade against the "Catholic Taliban" and their defenders...

Maybe you should go look for allies for this "holy war" of yours somewhere a bit more logical...

Like right here!

Look, I wasn't even talking about support. But honestly? It seems like the only version of free speech you actually care about is the kind that protects your own right to shout. Why even start a thread like this, really?

Besides, if you deal with a little bit of hassle—and maybe shell out some cash—you can actually fix those privacy issues online. Sure, it’s not exactly cheap by American standards, but it’s still a lot better than paying those predatory lawyer fees in Manhattan. 😁

Susan Price30 said:One more thing—if those entries here were made by anonymous users... Ownership. If someone files a report regarding certain posts on Reddit—which is a completely different beast compared to, say, long-form articles on other social media platforms—what would be the actual legal liability and consequences in that scenario? Reddit is such a joke, honestly. It’s nothing compared to the old forums. Is it just me, or does all this talk about whether filing a police report is even a viable option seem completely baseless?
Bringing up things that have absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand is just trolling.

I don't see any difference in relevance between saying "I reported you to the police" and "Man, we were at that BBQ yesterday and I was re-reading your posts—we were cracking up, then Pero opened a bottle of Knopfltrunkov's Traminer, which is honestly an incredible wine."

That’s true, but this might actually be even worse. If someone is resorting to threats just to silence a conversation, what does that say about their character? It’s pretty telling when people try to weaponize intimidation like that. In my opinion, it’s clearly just a troll with nothing to back them up.

So, that is really what I am getting at—the idea of using the police as a way to troll. If someone uses the threat of reporting someone to the authorities as a way to troll, then that is how it will be treated, at least in my humble opinion.

I never actually wrote or suggested that things should be reported to the moderators instead of the police. It is all the same to me who gets reported; my main concern is simply that such things aren't used as trolling threats during a discussion. If there truly is a reason to report something, I guess one should just do that quietly. Amen.

Can someone tell me how I even go about reporting a personal threat or hate speech to the police?

And what specifically were you planning on reporting? (I seem to recall you pointing out some hate speech in another thread—basically stuff you felt was hateful and kept being repeated).

I never once wrote or suggested that things should be reported to moderators instead of the police. Honestly, I don't care who gets reported—my only concern is that this stuff doesn't clutter up the discussion as trollish threats. If there's actual grounds for a report, just handle it quietly. Amen

The last thing I'd ever think to do is report something happening in another country, or even here in the States... it makes no difference to me at all.

Nothing right now—just curious how the process actually works in practice.

I have a few links saved, though I’m honestly not sure if I should be posting them here. To be fair, I’m not even sure it would be particularly wise to do so.
I did flag some hate speech to the site administrators a while back, making it clear that if they didn't take action, I'd be taking the matter to the authorities.
They ended up penalizing him, and as far as I'm concerned, it was the right call.
It wasn't my intention to threaten anyone or resort to blackmail—it’s simply that I have zero tolerance for hate speech.
And frankly, I don't believe that reporting hate speech should be viewed as some pathetic act of snitching.
I have personally lived through the reality of fascism—for those of you who haven't had to experience it firsthand, let me tell you, it isn't something to be trifled with.
