This whole distinction between "folk" music and "pop" is just nonsense. Every genre belongs to its people and serves its purpose for fun! Here in the States, country is the soul of cowboys and various other Texan types, blues is the folk of Black Americans, reggae is the folk of Jamaicans, and so on... so when someone tells me they "don't like folk music" but absolutely adore blues, rock, reggae, or country... I mean, it’s like saying you hate chicken but love fried chicken. 😬 Such hypocrisy!

I can get drunk and have a blast listening to all kinds of "party-folk" from everywhere—from the Irish and Jamaicans to Americans, Portuguese, and even Mexicans... 🙂 When I hear "Mexican girl," my hand just reaches for the bottle automatically! 😁

If there’s one thing I actively avoided while living in Dublin, it was those pubs playing traditional Irish music. I don't know, maybe it was just me, but listening to that when you're already sitting at a 0.10% blood alcohol level felt exhausting. Luckily, there were plenty of other options for nightlife in that city, so after a few rounds, we’d usually just head somewhere else.

As for the partying and the atmosphere, I think we Americans actually left quite an impression—because more than once, the locals (and other patrons) would come over specifically to meet us and see what all the noise was about. It mostly happened when our group of about 20 would get together for big sports games. After a couple of beers, the singing and cheering would start up. I always found it strange, though, that we never got kicked out or told to stop gathering—even though we definitely went overboard sometimes. We'd be shouting at the TV, jumping around, climbing on tables, and smoking like we were back in Amsterdam. When I finally asked a bartender why they were so tolerant of us, since we clearly weren't the most polite guests, he just told me nobody was going to mess with us because our two tables alone drank as much as ten other tables combined. 😁

I’ve never been much for that country music scene, so to be honest, I don't really care whose crowd it is. All I care about is the vibe. The Irish have never let me down, whereas at those local country shows, someone always ends up throwing bottles and starting a brawl. Is a good mood really worth it if you're heading home—or back to the hotel—with a busted face?

Honestly, Norwegians are just as wild. They basically drink themselves to death in such a polite, cultured way that they never cause any trouble. Their karaoke bars are always packed, too, with everyone singing along in unison. Does anyone else find that level of chaos strangely orderly?
