Scanning a term paper and converting it to Microsoft Word

So, here's my current disaster: I have this term paper in physical print because, well, I totally failed at saving an electronic version. I ended up dragging it down to a local FedEx Office to get it scanned and turned into a PDF. Then I tried to convert that mess into Microsoft Word, but everything is just locked tight—I can't edit a single thing. A friend actually tried to do the conversion for me, but the whole thing is a wreck; some of the text is garbled and the images are all distorted, and even though I've been trying to fix it, I'm getting nowhere. She told me it probably won't look any better because apparently Adobe doesn't play nice with the Microsoft Word format. Does anyone know if there’s a way to actually do this right, or maybe a print shop somewhere that can scan a document and spit out a clean Microsoft Word file directly?
