I wouldn't go so far as to say they're some obscure, underground act. I mean, come on—they’ve got albums hitting the Top 10 regularly (they've even snagged a #1 here in America), they've racked up plenty of Grammy nods, and you see them mentioned everywhere from niche rock blogs to the major music outlets...

Sure, that’s true if you actually pay attention to music. But looking at the big picture? If you went out and polled a hundred random people on the street and asked if they'd ever heard of them, I highly doubt the percentage of "yes" answers would be that high.

Lately, I've been spending most of my time digging through the local scene; there are some genuinely great new releases out if you have an appetite for a heavier sound.

Discoveries? I don't dig too deep because there isn't much worth finding. Every now and then, though, someone like Svemirko and his Tunguzija catches my eye.



The last thing I heard is leagues above anything being put out by local or even international artists. Mainly because it's rare to find someone who can play everything that well while also handling the recording and arrangement themselves.

Check out this killer South Korean baroque pop/rock record from '72—insane melodies and vocals. It’s by Shin Jung-hyeon, basically the godfather of rock over there. I don't know a ton about his life, other than he crossed the wrong dictator back then—refused to write a tribute song for him—so he spent some serious time rotting in prisons and psych wards 😢

Then there's Dorian Wood, a Costa Rican film student; I wouldn't exactly recommend his other videos if you aren't particularly fond of seeing naked, heavy-set men on screen🙂, but this cover of Ashes to Ashes featuring just a string orchestra is something else.

Richard Hawley, the singer-songwriter hailing from Sheffield. He actually spent some time playing guitar for Pulp.Nothing like a friend

Jonathan Fire*eater—the precursor to The Walkmen, featuring a new vocalist and several musicians from The Recoys. They never quite hit the big time commercially, but they certainly paved the way for the likes of The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the rest of that indie rock wave. It’s a shame about their singer, Stewart Lipton, passing away last year. No love like that.
