It really should be a total breeze, but after burning whatever I found on Google onto a CD, my PC won't even boot from it.

Can anyone drop a link to the actual file I need to burn to the disc?

I'm running Windows 7, 64-bit.

You type something like "how to create a bootable CD" into Google, and what do you get? Over 600,000 results. It’s a bit overwhelming, isn't it?

What exactly did you search for, and what part of those instructions did you ignore? What did you actually do differently than what the Google results told you to do?
Now that you mention it, it’s actually pretty simple—someone will step up and tell you exactly what needs to be done.

Is there an OS already on that machine, or is it totally blank?

Because you might just have your boot settings messed up—if the hard drive is set as the primary priority, it’s just going to skip over the CD entirely.🤷

@Anthony Jackson2/">@@Anthony Jackson2, I definitely set the boot settings up right—it starts booting from the CD without any issues, though if there's just some random junk disc in there, it throws an error like "boot error press any key." When I pop in the actual bootable one, it hits me with that "Windows is loading files" screen which takes forever, way longer than when I'm just booting straight from the hard drive, and then after "starting Windows," it finally crashes with "Windows Boot Manager - Windows failed to load because a required file is missing, or corrupt."

@wiredcanyon94/">@@wiredcanyon94 - Man, I'm getting a ton of search results, but most of them are just people explaining how to burn an ISO image with some burning software instead of actually finding a file with a bootable Windows on it... I can't even remember where or how I grabbed it since it was a few days ago. I was really hoping someone could just drop a link to the exact file so I don't waste my time messing around with trial and error.

First things first, you’ve gotta make sure you actually have a legit .iso file... I mean, don't be pulling stuff from sketchy sites or, even worse, random torrents.
Then, you grab some burning software and tell it to take that .iso and burn it onto a CD or a DVD—whichever one fits the data size you're working with.
The biggest rookie mistake people make is when they just copy the .iso file directly onto the disc. You can tell you messed up if you look at that burned CD using a standard file manager and see nothing but a single .iso file sitting there. That's not how it works.

copperrider59, what software were you using to burn those Windows ISO files I downloaded?

If I'm remembering right, I'm pretty sure it was Nero Burning ROM.

I just use Rufus to make a bootable NTFS USB drive. It gets Windows 10 up and running in under 15 minutes. I don't even bother with optical drives anymore; I just toss them in the trash.

Rufus is easily the best tool out there.
