Skype won't log in on Windows XP?

My aunt just picked up an old computer running Windows XP—it doesn't support Windows 7—and she’s really eager to start using Skype.
I went ahead and installed it for her, but once the installation finished, it simply refused to let her log in. Instead, I keep getting this error message:
“A problem occurred while signing in to Skype because your version of Internet Explorer is outdated.”
I’ve already tried installing a few different versions of Skype to see if that would bypass the issue, but nothing works; she still can't get logged in.
Does anyone have any advice on how to tackle this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

...it says right here...just go grab a newer version of Internet Explorer from Microsoft and get it installed.

ps: honestly, I doubt there are many PCs left that can't handle Windows 7...try running a program like HWMonitor or Speccy to check out the CPU and RAM specs first.

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron, and I am honestly quite unsure if it actually supports Windows 7

Actually, I am going to give it a shot and try to install Windows 7 if it turns out to be possible.

The machine in that link is barely even crawling with Windows XP, let alone running a single-core processor and a measly half-gig of RAM... seriously, don't even think about installing Windows 7
Skype needs some older versions if you want it to work, and I honestly doubt video calls will even function... it’d probably be fine just for texting/chatting though.

Skype versions older than 7.16 just don't work at all! I'm not even sure about 7.21 yet—so far, 7.40 seems to be holding up fine. God bless Microsoft, I guess.

I realize this laptop is essentially junk by today's standards—honestly, it’s practically ancient—but I feel terrible just tossing it in the trash. It still serves my aunt perfectly well for the basics, like checking Facebook, using WhatsApp, or browsing news sites. Older versions probably won't cut it since Microsoft bought Skype, but anything from after the takeover should theoretically work... first thing you gotta do is sort out a newer browser, maybe grab Internet Explorer 8. Also, check the control panel to see if that Windows XP machine actually has Service Pack 3 installed... honestly though, you're looking at a museum piece of a laptop that's somehow still breathing.

It’s likely clogged up with digital junk from browsing sketchy sites filled with malware. It would be a smart move to run a "check disk" on the hard drive and then scrub it clean using things like Malwarebytes or AdwCleaner.

ps: Check if there’s an open memory slot. If there is, scour eBay for some matching RAM—at least 1GB DDR333 or DDR400.

Look, I already mentioned my suspicions that this thing is total junk—but honestly, everything is running flawlessly except for WhatsApp.
I just finished getting Windows installed a few days ago, so it’s practically fresh.
Every single website loads perfectly, Facebook works without a hitch, and really, if I could just get WhatsApp up and running, this whole setup would be golden.

I just finished installing macOS a few days ago.
Websites load just fine, Meta works great, and honestly, if I could just get WhatsApp up and running, things would be perfect.
