Jamie Davis9 said:Well, looking at what they’re trying to pass off as the standard, it seems like they've actually succeeded in making it stick. The only reason I haven't been penalized for it yet—if there is any reason at all—is likely due to my own ability to negotiate my way out of a corner. It’s almost like being able to talk your way through a tense meeting with HR just by knowing exactly which levers to pull. 😁

That simply isn't true.
I’ve mentioned this before, but for years there was a running discussion regarding the Roma community in Chicago. Honestly, I didn't notice any specific moderation or special interventions being made at all—not until I finally spoke up and voiced my own concerns.
And honestly, the absolute pinnacle of moderation at that point was simply shutting the whole thing down.

Perhaps it’s just a matter of timing—maybe the moderators haven't had a chance to take a look at it yet?

Wait, do you honestly believe the moderators have the bandwidth to read every single thing posted here? It’s just not realistic. If you spot something that actually crosses the line or breaks the rules, just hit the report button on the little icon. That’s how this works.

And what on earth does that topic have to do with humor?
The fact that this thread has been locked only proves one thing: it was thoroughly analyzed, and it became immediately clear that there was no actual room for meaningful discussion here.

Look, you’re splitting hairs here. You can't go around looking for perfection in everyone, and you certainly shouldn't expect every single person—or even entire groups of people—to have nothing but glowing things to say about you. Honestly, I don't hold Rome in the highest regard myself; my own professional experiences have thrown all sorts of headaches my way involving them. To me, it feels like most of them are just out to pull a fast one on you. And what, you want me to strike that from the record? Because if you start labeling every bit of blunt humor as an "insult," that's exactly where this conversation is heading.

neonfox12 said:Because if that’s how you define humor—as being an insult—then we have a problem.

Look, if something qualifies as hate speech—and I’m honestly just asking the moderators here because I don't know where the line is—then it’s hate speech. Period. It doesn't matter if you say it straight to someone's face or try to hide it behind some "clever" little joke. The law isn't going to give you a pass just because you wrapped your vitriol in a punchline. I really don't understand why this is so confusing for you, or what kind of logic you're using here—are you suggesting that otherwise it's prohibited, but if it's presented as a (bad) joke, it suddenly becomes acceptable???

The law isn't going to give you a pass just because you wrapped your words in a punchline instead of saying them straight. I don't quite follow your logic here—are you suggesting that if it's delivered as a (bad) joke, it suddenly doesn't count?

Fundamental human liberties include the right to hold an opinion. Our ability to think for ourselves is what defines us, yet you seem to want to strip that away.

Look, if you're in a circle of like-minded people who appreciate dark humor and you make a joke at someone's expense, that's just comedy. But if that humor is specifically targeted at a minority group while they are listening, then it becomes an insult disguised by velvet gloves.

You’ve entered a discussion where the title itself explicitly states we are discussing jokes about Rome. To label that as hate speech is a stretch. 🤦
If there were a joke claiming one of our own forum members was born out of something unsavory, that would be an insult; as it stands, it isn't.

Speaking from experience—having grown up hearing all sorts of jokes about Canadians during my childhood—I can tell you it doesn't feel great when someone you barely know, who has zero connection to Canada, expresses a desire to joke about my background. My advice to you? Just laugh it off and tell a joke about whatever group that person belongs to. You can't act this soft and expect people to respect you just because of rules or legalities; respect is something you earn. Now, while some groups might not work particularly hard to earn that kind of regard, there are certainly individuals within those communities who command immense respect.

Daniel Davis40, what exactly are you suggesting we actually do here? What's your big plan?
And does this whole thing—whatever you're proposing—only target jokes about Rome, or are we talking about blonde jokes, Canadian jokes, Mexican jokes, cop jokes... all of it?
Because if it's just strictly about Rome, why leave everyone else out?

He’s back at it again, obsessing over his own biases and petty grievances, while she just keeps droning on about blondes and Canadians.
Please, spare me. 😁
I honestly tried looking at this from several different angles to shed some light on the issue, but if you ask me, the most contentious part is this:
We are talking about a public forum where the rules were clearly established, and they actually brought in moderators specifically to enforce them.

p.s. just so there's no misunderstanding here, I'm not suggesting that America is more fascist than any other nation on the planet.
In my view, what we see here is more of a fundamentalist attitude born out of pure ignorance and helplessness. It results in us treating people like those from certain marginalized communities as if they're permanent dependents whom we're happy to support, provided we're allowed to make jokes about Rome.
What I am attempting to clarify is that these groups actually agree to these rules because, within the context of this specific game, they're the ones winning.

neonfox12 - I honestly don't follow your logic at all, so I'm done with this.

Maria Reyes35 said:Daniel Davis40, what exactly would you have us do here? What’s your specific proposal?
And does this—whatever action you're suggesting—apply strictly to jokes about Rome, or should it extend to jokes about blondes, Canadians, Mexicans, or even cops too?
If it's just limited to Rome, then why aren't we addressing the others?

Well, I suppose the moderators should be the ones to decide—there ought to be some kind of protocol for handling situations like this. Personally, I wouldn't do anything; it's not my business either way. I simply pointed out something that I believe shouldn't be tolerated in public discourse. There are certain laws the government establishes regarding this sort of thing, and I assume there are forum rules for these scenarios as well, so I was merely highlighting the issue. I'm not making any definitive claims—I have zero interest in digging through the Penal Code or whatever legal statute exists, nor the forum guidelines, especially since I wouldn't even know how to interpret those provisions or determine if this actually constitutes a violation.

(In any case, I am certain this has nothing to do with whether the topic is categorized under humor or politics)

Give me a break. 😁

In fact, I think what we see here is more of a fundamental mindset born out of sheer ignorance and helplessness. It’s like how we might treat someone from a marginalized group—viewing them as a permanent ward of the state who needs constant support, yet still feeling entitled to mock them.
What I am trying to get across is that these groups actually agree to play by these specific rules because, within the context of this particular game, they are the ones coming out on top.

I decided to bring this down to a personal level because I’ve noticed you tend to miss the point when I speak in generalities.

Honestly, it feels like you’re intentionally playing dumb. ☕

You seem to have an issue only when the topic turns to certain minority groups, treating them like sacred cows compared to how you view Mexicans, Canadians, and so on...

I have to disagree with your P.S.—humor isn't tied to nationality, consciousness, or physical condition; it’s about the clever use of unexpected twists or the play on stereotypes.

At the end of the day, how do you think Jews feel when people make jokes regarding WWII and their history?

I honestly think one should just forward the link to the local Jewish community, Simon Wiesenthal Center, and the ACLU, and let those organizations handle the fallout. 🙂

Look, I came here specifically to address the moderators—not to sit around and spoon-feed arguments to every idiot who decides to get worked up over a thread.

The fundamental issue when debating you is that you clearly don't even grasp the definitions of the terms you're throwing around.
And honestly? Comparing Canadians and Mexicans to Jews and Romani people... 🤦

It’s certainly possible, though in my experience, those kinds of jokes rarely land unless you're specifically taking a jab at a Jew.
Nicole Johnson20 said:I’m stepping in here to address the moderators directly with a specific question. Just to be clear, I didn't come here to engage in a back-and-forth with every single jerk who decides to park themselves in my thread just to lecture me with their "arguments."

The fundamental issue I run into when we debate is that you don't seem to grasp the actual weight or definition of the words you're throwing around. It’s like trying to play a game of chess where one player keeps insisting a pawn can move like a queen—it makes having a meaningful conversation nearly impossible when the very foundation of our language isn't being respected.
It’s getting to the point where people are actually trying to compare Canadians and Mexicans to Jews and Romani people. 🤦

You have such a wonderful way with words. But look, you need to realize that you’re essentially standing in a courtroom right now, trying to defend your position against everyone in the room. The stakes here are high because how effectively you make this case is exactly what determines whether the moderators decide to actually uphold your argument. You just aren't quite grasping the situation yet.

That was a truly magnificent display of defending your position—completely devoid of any actual arguments, of course. 👏

I’m trying to draw a direct comparison between jokes targeting that specific group and jokes about the Romani, so I’m struggling to see where you're losing me. Why exactly are you equating the Romani with Jews, while simultaneously grouping Canadians and Mexicans into an entirely different category?

Getting rid of dark humor is just the first step toward full-blown censorship. Once you start banning certain jokes, you'll eventually find yourself having to police everything else too.

You sure have a way with words. 👏 Understand that you came here to defend an argument to everyone, and whether the moderators take that argument seriously depends entirely on how you defend it. You just don't get it.

What a stunning display of defending a position without providing a single actual argument. 👏

I am comparing humor targeting those specific groups to jokes about the Romani—why isn't that clicking for you? Why on earth are you equating the Romani with Jews, while treating Canadians and Mexicans as if they belong in a completely different category?

1. Bold—what argument are we even talking about???

2. Bold—you are absolutely losing it! What argument? What needs to be "taken seriously"? And before whom exactly??? I haven't even presented an argument that anyone needs to validate or reject—the mods will (hopefully) react if rules are broken, not based on whether my "argument" meets their standards.

What are you even rambling about? Do you honestly think I showed up here to justify myself to you??? And for what—to prevent the "suppression of free thought," as you put it?

3. Well, maybe it's because of historical circumstances???

Exactly. In general, trying to hunt down "offense" within comedy is the slippery slope that leads straight to censorship.
Nicole Johnson20 said:1. Bold—what kind of argument is that???

2. Bold—you’ve completely lost it! What argument am I supposed to weigh here, or against whom? I didn't even present a formal argument for anyone to validate or reject; my point is that people should react if rules are broken, not based on whether they agree with my specific "logic."

Man, what are you even talking about? Do you honestly think I came here to justify myself to you? And for what—to defend my "ability to think," as you put it?

3. Well, maybe it's because of historical circumstances???

Good grief, take a breath. Why all the tension over a debate about humor?

1. You can't just frame things that way—simply claiming something is offensive without explaining why doesn't work. Let others decide if something crosses the line. Explain *why* you believe this specific humor is offensive. And tell me, what happens to all the other jokes, including those about Jews that are far darker?

2. I'm having a hard time following you. What exactly is your goal with this topic?
Well, I'm speaking in front of everyone here, not just to my own humble self. Why do you think this attempt at censorship doesn't affect me too?

3. Which historical circumstances could possibly equate the experiences of Romani people with those of Jews?

Look, there's a massive difference between A) actual politics and B) just dark humor. I get that some jokes aren't fit for a formal political debate, but claiming that banning a joke about Romani people constitutes censorship is a stretch.

If you start pulling that thread, you’ll eventually have to ban everything else that might offend someone.

Clearly, the mod in charge of this PDF doesn't think it's an issue when a thread stays open and active for 11 years... 11 freaking years...

If you start banning those, you might as well just scrub everything else that could potentially offend someone.

At the end of the day, this really just comes down to whether the moderators actually know how to manage a thread and possess the basic competence required to distinguish actual spam from everything else. Nothing more, nothing less.

Great. This thread has been around for over a decade. Are you seriously going to point out which specific posts from this past year were even remotely problematic? This whole thing is a textbook example of Special Wanking—literally just two jokes between 2015 and today, and now suddenly, "Oh, OP, let's just shut the thread down."

Nicole Johnson20 said:wtf, how is banning dark humor the start of censorship, when stuff like that is already basically banned from being said in politics anyway?

That’s the whole point of dark humor. It gets a reaction because it’s politically incorrect and pretty brutal. It’s arguably the worst kind of sarcasm, irony, or cynicism—just direct, merciless mockery.

I totally agree it can be tasteless, but if we started banning everything "tasteless," we could probably ban half of Europe. Look at what Charlie Hebdo does—people fight so hard for their right to run covers featuring drowned Nazis in Texas, killed Belgians of Arab descent, or some ten-year-old Syrian kid drowning, etc.

I’m part Mexican, so I want jokes about Mexicans to be banned.

For example; a Mexican is lying under a plum tree and sees a snake slowly crawling toward him, so he tells his wife; hey honey, call 911 and tell them to bring an antivenom. His wife goes, oh my god, darling, did it bite you? He says, no, but it's heading this way right now.

And honestly, that hurts my feelings. Everyone who knows me knows I’d be the first one calling 911 myself.
