After Earth (2013)

I usually live for this kind of genre, but this... man... I’m actually speechless. It was bad—just straight-up terrible.
Anyway... apparently there's going to be a sequel to 😁

I honestly don't get what's so bad about this movie if you're looking at it within the standard framework of its genre. 😕

Why is everyone whining and making such a huge deal about how much of a piece of trash this film is?

This movie annoyed me way less—actually, it didn't annoy me at all. It has a decent pace and a coherent plot. What more do you want?
The film is far more believable than some pretentious, pseudo-intellectual nonsense like Cloud Atlas.

As a sci-fi action flick compared to the last Star Trek film, this is freaking Tolstoy. (For instance, I completely forgot the stupid plot of that Star Trek film, but I’m going to remember this one for a long time... maybe partly because people keep trashing a perfectly solid little movie as a "disaster.")
Everything I’m reading here and online about this movie could just as easily be pinned onto the last Star Trek film... from the weak acting to the plot clichés... whatever... or onto thousands of other recent movies, really.
Only, this movie is actually more entertaining than that gayish, broom-in-the-ass Star Trek.

I seriously do not understand what people find so bad about this?!?
To me, this was an average or even above-average film for this year. (I mean, compare this to something like Iron Man 3... they're roughly on the same level of "intelligence and quality," except this one is actually more fun in its concept... etc.)
And I love how the film doesn't try to be funny, self-aware, "cool," ironic, postmodern, or any other kind of weak bullshit... whatever.

The movie is old-school and simple. Father-son dynamic... etc. It has almost an 80s feeling to it.

IMDb gives it a 4/10????

Seriously, what's less cliché or more idiotic in Avatar than in this movie??

If there's some "Avatar expert" out there, please explain what's so smart, original, fresh, or new about Avatar... and why this movie is so much worse. Especially regarding the high-level core idea and story outline?
At least there's an actual attempt here. In Avatar, there isn't even an attempt at originality or interesting sci-fi.
That thing is just ideological "they killed nature & those nice native Americans" nonsense for kids.
But now he is one of them and he understands... blah blah blah.🤣

There is no bigger cliché than Avatar, yet look at how it's received versus how this film is treated. 😕

If you're calling this a "domestic soap opera," then what on earth is Pacific Rim? A toddler show? Del Toro directing the Teletubbies? 🤷

I’ve gotta say, I’m feeling pretty let down by this movie—honestly, just like a lot of what I've seen lately.
It feels like sci-fi flicks are just rolling off an assembly line these days, and most of them? Total junk.

Boring as hell. Smith's kid is a total hack, and honestly, Smith himself was just a disaster waiting to happen. What a mess...

I meant it literally—like, the kid is totally losing it because his dad isn't home when those beasts kill his sister (he’s screaming your name, asking where you were, just pure chaos), and then right at the start, the wife tells him she doesn't even recognize her own son. 🙄

Yeah, those "dramatic gems" are even worse garbage, but whatever.
The rest of the movie is why it works. Just ignore this stupid part. I assume the script/story/whatever was written by Will (keeping his own soap opera Smith family in mind while writing)... what makes you think there won't be more heavy-handed melodrama in the film?

But this is a movie where that soapy stuff is obvious, expected, easy to grasp, and fits the context.

What actually bothers me are the degenerate plots and degenerate moments found in hundreds of thosewannabe-"great" movies released over the last 3-4 years... not even going to list them.
Today, those movies that don't want to be "clumsily funny Will Smith," but instead try to spout failed wisdom, seriousness, or faux coolness, are 100 times more pathetic than this film.

Why did anyone expect there wouldn't be pathetic moments here, and why are you even remembering or perceiving them?? It was obvious because of the Smith family that there would be "Marisol" moments in the film.
You should have focused on the good elements of the movie and enjoyed them. And there were plenty!

4/10 Honestly, I hate that I’m giving it such a low score because Will Smith is one of my absolute favorite actors... but this movie just didn't hit for me. It was basically two or three tense scenes and then nothing else.

If you haven't seen this movie yet, do yourself a favor and skip it. I don't know what possessed me to hit play last night, but man, was it bad. Just awful. Like Nicholas Kern7 mentioned, my heart really goes out to Will Smith here. He’s one of my favorites, but there’s just nothing this script can do to save him. Honestly, I can't even remember the last time I sat through something this boring and poorly made. It was painful.
I'm giving it a 2/10, and that's strictly because of Will Smith.

I caught a screening of it just the other day, and honestly, I was counting down the minutes until the credits rolled.... I feel like I’ve already voiced my opinion enough, but I was genuinely let down... 3/10

Just caught this on my TV by accident. Will Smith is great in it, and the story is pretty engaging, though maybe a bit too simple for my taste. Jaden Smith isn't actually as bad an actor as everyone made him out to be; I think I just found his face a bit off-putting rather than his acting being overly dramatic at times.
Every planet in the universe looks incredible, but the writer clearly didn't give much thought to plot holes—not that I cared enough to look for them. I just enjoyed the ride. That creature at the end was interesting, especially its perception of humans. 6/10.
