Canon PIXMA series troubleshooting

Hey there... does anyone know if it’s actually possible to mess up an ink refill? So, I picked up a new Canon PIXMA series back in April. I went through the little bit of ink that came pre-installed pretty quickly, so I took it to get refilled. Everything seemed fine at first, but when I went back to the same shop for the second refill, the printer just quit on me. Now it won't print anything—it either spits out blank pages or just manages to print the first two lines before giving up. It's a total nightmare. I already tried resetting the printer and reinstalling the drivers on my PC, but nothing works...
Can anyone please help me out here?
Also, after that second refill, I noticed quite a bit of ink leaking out of the cartridge...

Don’t quote me on this, but you’re probably looking at lower quality—think thinner, less saturated ink—since that cartridge was refilled a second time.
