Best laptop around $1,000?

Greetings. I am seeking recommendations from those of you who actually stay current with the market regarding a new laptop purchase. At present, my usage patterns have shifted heavily toward mobile computing over desktop setups, necessitating a significant hardware upgrade.

My primary activities involve multimedia consumption and web browsing, supplemented by occasional graphic design work in GIMP and some gaming via Steam. I am running Linux Mint, so any machines shipped with pre-installed Windows are immediately disqualified—it is an unnecessary surcharge for software I have no intention of using. Furthermore, please spare me the suggestions for specialized gaming rigs like the ASUS ROG series; they aren't what I'm looking for. Regarding specifications, I am aiming for an Intel i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, a reliable battery life, and an NVIDIA graphics card. An SSD is preferred for storage, though I wouldn't rule out an HDD if upgrading to an SSD later proves to be a straightforward process. Oh, and one crucial detail: it absolutely must feature a standard US keyboard layout. Beyond that, the specifics are secondary.

I believe I have finally reached a decision regarding both the trade-in (not that I’m looking to make an advertisement here) and the laptop itself. I’ve decided to go with the ASUS K550VX... honestly, I just can't shake that specific, familiar "feel" of the plastic under my hands, you know? Plus, it leaves me with a bit more cash in my pocket, which is always a plus. Now, all that remains is the long wait for my next paycheck to hit the bank.
