Open Your Eyes is a seriously brilliant movie with a genius storyline, but if you ask me, Vanilla Sky is one of those rare remakes that actually beats out the original. Personally, I think it nails the atmosphere way better, and the characters have this slightly different edge that just clicks with my vibe. It’s easily one of my all-time favorites. The main reason people sleep on it is simply because it’s a remake, but honestly, the film is fantastic and totally underrated; it offers a fresh perspective on the same core story, and that’s exactly how you should approach it. Of course, your take probably depends on which version you sat through first.

As for people asking for spoilers about the ending... good grief, you never know what kind of ridiculous requests you're going to run into on this forum. 🤣 🤦

I haven't seen Vanilla Sky yet. I finally sat down and watched Open Your Eyes this past Saturday. Usually, I'm a "the original is always better" kind of person when it comes to remakes, but I don't know, I'll give Vanilla Sky a shot since 😍Cruise is in it, then maybe I'll have more to say.

P.S. Leave Hurts alone, guys. This thread is for talking about the movie, not for picking on her because she hasn't finished it yet. 😁

Man, I could honestly say this is one of the best films ever made.
But if you ask me, there’s really nothing left to decipher about the ending—it’s pretty straightforward, and everything clicks perfectly by the final act (even if it keeps you guessing right up until the finish line).

Even if it feels a bit "scattered," it has its perks—for instance, it skips > that murder at the end spoiler>>, which felt unnecessary in the original version. Plus, there's that scene in Times Square.

There is one specific detail from the original that I noticed, and I think it’s vital: > the fact that Sophia never actually fell for Caesar. Their romance only truly blossoms within that "dream." He also keeps a friend he lost in the real world, and all the chaos happening in his dream seems like his own conscience punishing him for his past actions—like how Nora keeps haunting him... and so on. spoiler>>

I didn't experience it quite that way myself. I don't necessarily see it as a matter of guilt over Nora, and while the situation with Sophia is important, I feel it serves more to highlight her later transformation, essentially acting in alignment with his desires.
These elements are simply tools used by his mind to manipulate him, all built upon a rather banal premise: humans find long-term, absolute happiness to be utterly unbearable. The human psyche will go to any lengths to disrupt a state of perfect bliss because it finds such stability fundamentally unacceptable, even when it's theoretically possible. In this light, Nora is merely a catalyst for waking up, much like his disfigured face. A person is incapable of being happy because their own mind constantly sabotages them, creating horrors that are far more intense than any external circumstances could ever be.
That is just my take on it.

The movie is pure genius!
Sure, it’s a bit of a mind-bender—trying to untangle the constant blurring between reality and dreams can definitely leave you feeling disoriented—but I suppose that was exactly what the director intended, wasn't it? To craft something truly intriguing and surreal. In the end, most of those lingering questions sort of settle into place, even if some ambiguity remains hanging in the air.

A total bullseye and a real testament to the caliber of American—and honestly, just great global—cinema!

The Spaniards really know how to craft a killer movie, especially when it comes to thrillers and horror. You should definitely check out The Hidden Blade
