Hey everyone, I was wondering if someone could walk me through the right way to wire this LAN jack shown in the photo? I really want to make sure it can actually handle Gigabit speeds, especially since the cable I'm working with is Cat6a. Thanks a bunch!!

I’ve been staring at these diagrams myself, but honestly, there are about ten different ways you could slice this cake 🙄 If you happen to know the right way to wire everything up on that specific outlet, would you mind letting me know? No pressure at all, though.

I wouldn't guess. Honestly, you're probably better off asking on the Internet forums...

If you're following the diagram, just use a standard straight-through cable for 1000base-T, since you'd only really need a crossover if you were hooking one computer directly to another, and 1000base-T basically means you're all set for a gigabit link.

Looking at the connector, those solid squares represent the wires that are fully colored, while the triangles indicate where the striped wires go.

By the way, honestly, Cat6a is totally overkill for a gigabit connection, so you can easily get by with Cat6 or even Cat5e as long as you aren't running a massive cable across the whole house.

The construction crew actually installed Cat6a by mistake when I had specifically asked for Cat6, but honestly, having the extra headroom doesn't bother me one bit. It’s kind of like getting a free upgrade to a premium streaming service when you only paid for the basic plan—it's just a nice little bonus. So, looking at the options on the outlet, we'll go with option B, thanks!
