I'm on the hunt for a laptop in the $1500 range. It needs to be light enough to lug around to the office every day, but I also need decent battery life so I can actually get some work done during my train commute. My main use cases are basic office tasks and web browsing, plus some downtime at home for movies and music.
Nothing heavy-duty here—I'm definitely not gaming or running intense graphic design software.

Any suggestions? I'm feeling pretty lost staring at the endless sea of laptops in this price bracket.

If you’d actually bothered to read the stickied thread meant for anyone buying a laptop, you wouldn't be wandering around so lost, and we’d actually have a clue how to help you. Right now, we're flying blind because you haven't even mentioned what size you need (are we talking 15.6", 13.3", or just some 10" 2-in-1 tablet?) or if you need Windows—which matters if you're looking at those 10" options and deciding between Windows or Android.

As for your workload, you can technically get by on any of them. Sure, a bigger screen is more comfortable, but typing on a 10" hybrid is doable enough...

When it comes to movies and entertainment at home, none of these are going to be "perfect" if you're planning on watching with someone else; in that case, you'd want a 17" beast or just plug into a big external monitor. If you're just chilling solo, any of the three sizes will do fine.

So, just let us know the size and which OS you prefer so we can actually give you an answer. And for heaven's sake, read that stickied thread first... 😬

Hope I'm not too late to the party here. 🙂 Thanks for starting this thread, I'll go catch up on the reading. 😁

Alright, I need a 15.6'' screen and Windows.

The rest of my requirements:
- I shop wherever.
- Screen resolution and display effects don't matter to me.
- Warranty isn't a big deal.
- No brand preference.

Thanks for the help. Sorry for the brief first post. 🙂

One option is the new Dell Inspiron 15. They’re solid, reliable machines, which is backed up by their 3-year basic warranty—the longest you'll find from any major brand. At about 4.8 lbs, they're easy enough to carry around without killing your back. Just a heads-up: these don't come with Windows pre-installed, so you'll have to factor that cost in separately. An i3 processor should handle whatever you throw at it, but if you can swing the extra cash, there's an i5 version. Do the math on the Windows license first to see which deal actually makes sense for you:

To hunt down the best prices, you should always check PriceGrabber:

The other contender is the Toshiba L50. This one comes with Windows already loaded and a standard 2-year warranty, plus a "No matter what" guarantee for the first year. Basically, if it gets damaged or stolen, they swap it out for a new one, though you'll need to check the fine print on their site to be sure:

Just a quick note: the Toshiba doesn't have a DVD drive. Personally, I don't see it as a big deal since nobody uses them anymore, but I guess it depends on how much you care about that stuff...

Tycoon, sorry for the late reply. I got a bit sidetracked with everything else and totally lost track of my laptop search, but thanks so much for the help. I’m definitely going to check out those Dell models! Appreciate it. 👍
