Hi there!
I’m looking for some advice on how to set a specific program to launch in the background when I boot up my PC. Ideally, I want it to run silently—no pop-ups appearing on my desktop and nothing cluttering up the taskbar. Just running quietly in the background.
I know there’s a way to toggle this during the startup process, but I can't quite remember the steps to get there.
Thanks! 🙂

Just hit the Start button, then type msconfig into the "run" box. From there, head over to the Startup tab and uncheck any programs you don't actually need—that way they won't clutter things up every time Windows boots up.

Look, I need to make sure that program launches automatically when I boot up my PC... but it HAS TO RUN IN THE BACKGROUND, you know? Like how Skype works—you turn on your computer, and it's running, but there's nothing popping up on your screen. I MEAN IT'S ACTIVE IN THE SYSTEM, BUT THERE'S NO OPEN WINDOW ON THE DESKTOP.

It all depends on how the software was built. If there isn't a specific setting or a toggle in the command line to handle this, you're stuck.

If that fails, try forcing another startup app to launch right after yours. Hopefully, that’ll strip its focus and kick it into a background window.

I’m working with the comserve.exe program.
I need it to launch automatically when my PC boots up, but I don't want the window popping up on my screen every single time. Can anyone help me set that up?

So, here’s the trick—head over to the Start menu (you know, where that Windows logo lives), hit on "All Programs," and hunt down the "Startup" folder. Once you find it, just right-click and select "Open." From there, simply toss a shortcut of whichever program you want into that folder. Next time you boot up your PC, Windows will automatically kick that program right into gear.
If you're looking to have it launch minimized—so it doesn't clutter your screen immediately—check the program's own internal settings first to see if they offer that option. If they don't, no worries! Just right-click that shortcut you just moved, go into "Properties," look for the "Run" dropdown, and switch it over to "Minimized."

That might just do the trick. Thanks! I'll let you know if it doesn't work out. 🙂

By the way, we’re talking about XP here. How do you actually get a program like this installed at a repair shop?
Check out this link; it’s exactly what I was talking about.

If you're looking for that XP startup folder, you can find it right here: C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Everything else remains pretty much the same as before.

To get those services running—you know, if that's what you're after—just hit Start, pull up the Run command, and type in services.msc
Once that window pops up, just scan through the list for the specific service you need, and then go ahead and switch the Startup type over to Automatic.
But wait a second—what exactly is this comserve.exe thing? I did a quick search, and apparently, Google is flagging it as potential malware. Are you absolutely certain you want that thing running on your system?

Yes. Is there any way I can add it to my services?

To get things moving, just fire up sc.exe
The command looks like this:

sc create binPath= ""

Basically—and don't forget this part—you'll swap out for whatever you want to call the service, and then use the full, absolute path for to wherever that file actually lives on your drive. And please, keep those quotation marks in there! I'm pretty sure this should still hold up even on an old Windows XP machine, though that’s a bit of a throwback, isn't it?

Quick edit: make sure you don't actually type those angle brackets, and—this is a big one—be careful to leave that single space right after the equals sign
I mean, I'm not entirely sure what exactly you're trying to launch here. It’s quite possible you might need to jump into the Registry and tweak a few settings to get everything running smoothly.

My bad, I was skimming way too fast and think I missed the point 😁
