Audio issues

So, I’ve run into a bit of a headache. I installed this sound booster program and everything was running smooth until yesterday. I was right in the middle of playing Call of Duty 4 when the game suddenly started crashing. A Realtek window popped up along with this other tiny little dialog box. This small one had a bunch of checkboxes, plus two more at the bottom—one on the left and one on the right. For some reason, I checked the one on the left, and honestly, it actually fixed the crashing for a minute. But then I restarted my PC, and now I have absolutely zero sound. I've been hunting for that little settings window everywhere, but it's nowhere to be found. Does anyone have any idea what that window was or how to get my audio back? I'm running Windows 7. Please, I really need some HELP

Which little program are we talking about? Is it something you can just uninstall?

You probably just muted yourself. Go into your sound settings and double-check everything—make sure mute isn't toggled on and verify that the audio is actually routed to the right output, like your speakers. You might have accidentally sent the sound to some random, unused, or non-existent jack instead...

I've already checked everything, it's definitely not on mute. Everything in the system says it's working fine, and I even combed through a ton of YouTube tutorials, but still nothing. Like I mentioned at the start, I clicked on some little checkbox somewhere and now I can't find it again. Is there any way to just reset my sound settings back to factory defaults so it's like it was before?

Well, if you actually had System Restore turned on and there’s a recent restore point available, that’s pretty much your only shot.

Look, just go into your sound properties, hit up the playback devices, and right-click to show all devices. There might be a blocked device hiding in there somewhere...

Wait, how am I even supposed to get to the sound properties?

Control Panel -> Sound -> Playback

Control Panel -> Sound -> Playback

Now, right-click inside that window and check the box to show all devices. Then just see which one is set as the default...

You can also just right-click "This PC" and hit manage—or just go straight to Device Manager. Look under sound devices. Make sure it’s actually enabled and doesn't have some stupid yellow warning icon next to it...

Try right-clicking inside that window and checking the box to "Show Disabled Devices." That should reveal everything so you can see which one is actually set as the default...

Man, when I go to the Sound settings, I don't see a "playback" option. All I've got is playback, recording, sounds, and communications. But I checked things another way and everything seems to be running fine.

Man, thanks a ton, taipan. My speakers were totally disabled... everything's working perfectly now.
Basically, that speaker is back in action. Thanks again!
