Microsoft Office help needed

Hey there!
So, I just picked up this laptop running Windows 8, but I’m having a bit of a meltdown because I can't find Microsoft Office anywhere—do I actually need to go out and buy it separately or what?
The weird thing is, when I poked around in the Microsoft Office folder, I found this video that's supposed to walk you through everything, and at the very end, it says "everything is ready to go," but—surprise, surprise—I still can't find the actual program anywhere... Help me please! :/

You didn't actually get Microsoft Office bundled with your new laptop—that’s a separate software package unless you specifically paid extra for it. At most, what came pre-installed on your machine is just a 21-day trial version of Office.

Microsoft Office is actually separate software that doesn't come bundled with Windows; if you didn't pick up a license separately, you won't find it pre-installed on your laptop.

So, I was sitting here working through my files when I noticed something incredibly annoying—I type an asterisk (*) or a number (1.) followed by a tab, expecting the usual automatic Bullets and numbering to kick in, but nothing happens. It just stays as plain text. I haven't changed any settings, I’m using the exact same document I was using five minutes ago, yet suddenly the automation has decided to take a permanent vacation. Does anyone know how to flip the switch and get this functionality back?
