Images aren't loading

Greetings to everyone,

My sister is going to absolutely murder me—she’s got all those irreplaceable family photos on this computer, which, frankly, means a lot to her—and I think I’ve managed to make things worse. I suspect I ran into some WannaCry malware, so I tried to scrub it using Norton, but now the images seem... "off." I can't tell if the virus actually mangled the files or if my attempt at a cleanup caused the damage.
The corrupted photos won't open at all; this is what happens when I try:

To make matters more frustrating, the damaged files won't even upload, whereas a standard photo I just downloaded from the web opens up perfectly fine.

Crypto stuff usually works by making everything on your drive totally useless. There’s no magic fix... at least none that I know of.

The key is the main issue here. People were paying whatever was demanded just to get their files back—some even paid and still walked away empty-handed without a key. The real problem is, what happens to the encryption key once you've wiped out the WannaCry?

Once you get hit by crypto ransomware, you’re basically finished. My company’s entire database was wiped out, and even with our top-tier IT specialists on it, we couldn't recover a single thing. There is absolutely no guarantee you'll actually receive a working decryption key if you decide to pay up. It's just a total disaster.

Good grief. How on earth did you manage to sweep all of that up so quickly?

On a different note, at least now you finally have a chance to tidy up your desktop a bit.😁
