Hey, so I've got this Dell laptop and today, for the first time ever, I'm getting this weird error whenever I try to shut it down... it just takes forever to actually turn off. Since I can't really upload the photo I took to show you guys what's happening, I'll just type out the error message itself... I'm pretty sure someone here has seen this before. Basically, I get this blue screen and the error says DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE.

Everything's been totally fine with this thing until today, so this is a first... anyone have any advice or know how I can fix this? thanks a bunch..

Which Dell model are you running, and what OS are you using?
It's likely an issue with the power management driver. I ran into something similar on my Dell Inspiron, though I was on Windows 7 at the time. On 8.1, a popup appears occasionally, but then it disappears immediately...

It’s possible you’ve got some garbage running, like malware, a virus, or a bot...
A failing drive is a possibility, but I doubt that's it. It's taking too long and freezing the OS/computer...
Or maybe an update is hogging resources in the background. I still don't get why people trust Apple enough to let them run constant updates. I never use them and everything works fine.
You buy a new car and you drive it. Why would it need an update?
You buy a toothbrush and you brush your teeth. What kind of update?
The only things that ever actually need updating are Java and that sort of nonsense. They shouldn't even be inventing this constant stream of new crap just to screw us over.

It's a Dell Inspiron running macOS.
I honestly never had a single issue with this thing until I actually sat down and wrote about it, which prompted me to finally... yeah, update all those drivers. There were so many of them. The blue screen isn't popping up anymore, but now I'm noticing this other weird thing. Like, when I unplug it from the wall—so the battery is still in there, obviously—the screen brightness just keeps fluctuating on its own. I went into the Settings and cranked the brightness up, but it still does it. It’s not even a huge deal, just annoying... it dims and brightens every 4 or 5 minutes 😵 so, what's the deal here? any idea what I should do... 🤦

And about that blue screen, looks like it really was just the drivers after all. Nothing majorly broken, unless this brightness thing is some new disaster?? thanks to both of you..

Sandra Cook60, regarding that car update you mentioned... you just buy it and drive. I mean, if they're putting in new parts, it's basically an upgrade, right? I don't believe things just work better on their own just because they're new, even if 😁 you always have to keep adding stuff, keep updating... hm..

It is likely that "automatic adjust" is enabled. You should go into your Settings and disable it...
I don't have my laptop on me right now, so I can't say for certain—but you might want to check under "power options" as well, since that's where you manage battery performance and power consumption.

So, I've got more bad news... tried putting my laptop into hibernation last night and it just hung there forever before hitting me with that same blue screen of death again. Now, when I boot it up, it keeps throwing a black screen at me with the option to go into Safe Mode...

I ran a driver scan and it says there are 14 updates waiting. Does anyone know which program I should actually use to download them all?

If I recall correctly, I was dealing with a pretty similar headache on my HP Pavilion... I can't help but wonder if some buggy drivers might be at the root of all this...

it keeps popping up on my screen whenever I boot up... i didn't really pay much attention to the specifics this time, but next time i fire it up i'll definitely take a look at that list down there.

It rarely ever shuts down on me, though I suspect those video drivers might be acting up... I recently installed the K-Lite codec pack, which has been running for about a week now, but since there aren't any specific graphics drivers available for Windows 7, I've just been making do with the ones from Vista, and honestly, it’s such a massive headache...

So, I snapped some photos of what this Blue Screen of Death is throwing at me, just so you guys can actually see what's going on...
I'm dropping the image links here—sorry if this isn't really how things are done around here, but for some reason, the site just won't let me upload anything, no matter how much I shrink the files...

Any ideas? Help...😢

I'm dropping the image links here, and I really want to apologize in advance if this isn't allowed, but for some reason, no matter how small I make the files, nothing seems to upload directly to the site...

Help please 😢

First, grab an adware cleaner, run a full scan, and then paste the results right here in the thread... Next, download GPU-Z so you can check the actual temperatures for both your graphics card and your processor, and definitely run MemTest to rescan your RAM. Also, take a good look to see if the cooling vents aren't completely clogged up, and honestly, you might want to pick up a laptop cooling pad with built-in fans...

So, after I finally got those drivers installed, the Blue Screen of Death isn't popping up anymore... which is a relief, I guess.

http://prntscr.com/5t6i7y

About 10 minutes ago, I went ahead and installed that first Audio controller, then rebooted my laptop, and... yeah, Startup Repair showed up immediately. I managed to fix it by basically rolling back—uninstalling that last driver—and now the laptop actually boots up normally.

http://prntscr.com/5t6hv4

What do you guys think I should do about the rest of these drivers? Where’s the best spot to grab them and how should I handle it? Because right now it keeps telling me I'm missing...

I always stick to the manufacturer's official website, because honestly, if you aren't 100% sure about what you're doing, it’s better to just hand it over to someone who actually knows their stuff... I find myself helping my cousins and my godparents with all sorts of tech issues constantly, and it really makes me wonder if I should just bite the bullet and start my own business one day 🙂

So, the issue is I just moved and right now I don't really have anyone around to... you know, give my stuff to... so I'm looking for some advice. What do you guys think about this list of drivers I'm missing? Should I go ahead and scavenge them from the Dell website?
