What's the best oil for frying?

Does anyone actually know how to determine the absolute lowest burn speed for a CD or DVD?
It seems like every single package you pick up at Best Buy or Target just screams about these massive, high-speed ratings.
Why am I even obsessing over this? Well, it’s because I’ve been trying to burn some PlayStation games, and I’m running into a bit of a technical headache. The instructions suggest sticking to a max 4x speed for the best results, but every single disc I buy—whether it's Verbatim or something similar—says it won't go any lower than 8x! It’s incredibly frustrating! Even when I go into my burning software and manually set the speed to 2x or 4x, the drive just ignores me and insists on cranking it up to 8x anyway!

See, that link you sent me is actually for rewritable media—basically a DVD-RW—but I'm specifically looking for a standard CD, though honestly, that's beside the point right now. My main concern? Well, I've always suspected that the PlayStation might have trouble reading those rewritable (write/erase) discs, don't you think?
