Hey there! I could really use some expert advice here πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚
I’ve got Dell XPS 13 installed on my laptop, and I managed to migrate some critical text messages from my old phone onto it. Now, I need to get those messages moved over to an external hard drive. Is there actually a way to do this?
The only "solution" I've stumbled upon is printing out something like 200 pages, which feels incredibly stupid. Is there any way to just copy the messages directly, or maybe move the entire program along with all its data from the laptop onto a portable drive? I'm worried about what happens when this laptop eventually dies...

...onto the laptop. On the computer, essentially. The data is now sitting on the laptop, or rather, on the computer.

Now I need to somehow copy this onto an external hard drive. Is there a way?

If data is saved on a laptop, is there a way to copy it to another location (a different folder, a USB stick, another PC)?

The only option I found was printing about 200 pages, which seems a bit ridiculous.

Personally, I wouldn't even call that a small amount...

Is there any way to copy the messages or reinstall the program along with all the data from the laptop onto an external hard drive?

The data you moved to the laptop isn't actually inside the program you used to transfer it from the phone. Some might be in subfolders within the main program directory, but they aren't part of the "program itself."

The data is on the laptop, and you manage it (transfer, copy, delete) just like anything else on the laptopβ€”files, folders, etc.

If you move the data you transferred from your phone to another computer, you only need that specific program (Dell XPS 13) to read the files if they are in its proprietary format. Basically, just install the same program you have on the laptop onto whichever computer you move the data to.

In short: if you want that same data on another computer, just copy it to a USB drive, plug it into the other machine, install the same software (Dell XPS 13)... and you're done.

Conclusion πŸ˜’ :
If you plug an external hard drive into the laptop, you're already set. You already have the program required to open those mobile files installed on the laptop.

What if the laptop dies?

I don't even want to contemplate that possibility. 😒

Create a Plan B. That should include a computer you can plug the external drive into, and then install Dell XPS 13 on that computer (you should also keep a backup of the installer/installation file somewhere safe).

Everything you're saying makes sense on paper, but here's the catch: I can't actually find those messages or contacts anywhere on my laptop unless I have that specific app running.

I get that they're technically sitting on the computer, but they won't be there if the machine dies or if I end up having to reinstall macOS...

The thing is, the app doesn't give me any way to export or transfer the data. It's like I'm locked outβ€”if I want to see my messages, I have to go through the program, and the only "save" option it offers is printing. And honestly, trying to print 200 pages just to keep a record seems ridiculous if there's even a slight chance I could just grab everything and move it to an external drive or another computer. 😡

I'm looking for a workaround... I'm convinced there has to be a way to locate the actual saved files (they're invisible to me right now without opening the app) and move them to a hard drive or a different PC. That way, I could at least view them later by installing the same software again. Anyone have any ideas?... πŸ™‚

I'd highly recommend moving this entire folder over to an external hard drive, much like how you'd back up your most precious family photo albums to keep them safe from any sudden digital mishaps.

just move that whole folder over to an external hard drive

πŸ™ That’s exactly what I’m looking for. THANKS A MILLION! πŸ™‚
