Hey everyone, I'm new hereβ€”hope I'm not posting this in the wrong spot πŸ˜‰ I'm guessing plenty of you guys probably know your way around Wake-on-LAN and how to trigger a PC boot via that "remote control" feature or whatever it's called... I'm a bit out of my depth here, so if someone could walk me through the whole process, I'd really appreciate it. I've already enabled the Wake-on-LAN option in my settings, but I haven't messed with the BIOS yet. If anyone knows how to tackle that part, please give me a detailed breakdownβ€”just a heads-up, though, I'm running on Wi-Fi. Thanks.

Look, man, that site isn't working for youβ€”my bad, I totally forgot to mention one thing. I actually need to be able to boot up my PC using my phone, specifically an iPhone 5... I've done a little reading on the subject, but honestly, I'm pretty lost when it comes to how Wake-on-LAN actually works.

Just a bit of a mindless question hereβ€”what do you actually need the Wake-on-LAN function for? What's the end goal?

I mean, I'm assuming I can just fire it up whenever I need to without actually being sitting right next to itβ€”I usually just manage everything via LogMeIn once the machine is running, and since LogMeIn is set to launch on startup, that part is handled. Anyway, does anyone actually have a solution for this that they could walk me through? I'd really appreciate it. I could even plug it directly into the router if that makes things easier...

First off, you’ve gotta sort out that IP address situation. Your router's getting a new one from the ISP every single day, so you definitely need a way to turn that dynamic IP into a static one. If you don't have another computer running on your local network, you might want to look into a Dyn service to handle it.
Next up is the whole headache of activating LogMeIn and figuring out what the current password is. I'm not an expert on it, but there should be a way to reset or grab that via email, right?
Another move could be setting up some kind of private tunnel using VNC, then you can just grab whatever info you need from there...

There are plenty of other tutorials out there like this: Wake-on-LAN

So, I’ve already set up a static IP, but it was configured through a USB dongle for my wireless connectionβ€”now I’m wondering if I even need to bother redoing that since I’m plugged directly into the router via Ethernet. Also, does the computer actually need a hardwired internet connection to make WOL work? I have another PC sitting on the same network,
but that one is running on Wi-Fi (neither machine is currently wired up to the internet). TeamViewer isn't the issue here; I have a persistent password set up so I can jump in and manage the PC 24/7 once it's running. My real headache is figuring out how to actually trigger the boot-up from my phone while I'm away...
