What's the best Wi-Fi card to buy?

I'm looking to pick up a Wi-Fi card for my desktop. The distance from the router is about 13 feet, with just a single wall separating the PC and the router.

I've noticed there's a huge variety of those USB dongle-style network adapters that you just plug directly into a port, so I'm wondering if those actually perform well, or if there's anything specific I should be looking for when shopping around?

If you could provide some recommendations, I'd appreciate it.
