Love and Gangsters (2013)

I caught a quick interview with the director of Love and Gangsters on PBS regarding the movie's release. He seems like quite a personable guy, so I guess the film might be pretty interesting. I'll probably check it out.

It’s finally making its way into theaters! Honestly, I was quite heartbroken to have missed out on seeing it at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Anyone here actually caught Love and Gangsters?

With the tech boom we’re living through, the internet basically makes everyone more disconnected from reality. We’re all retreating into this virtual world where it feels easier to be "free" than it actually is in real life. Honestly, there are more downsides to this than people want to admit. Watching this documentary, you really see how much harder it's become for people to find a genuine connection. Even when they do meet someone, they're often too guarded or scared to show any real emotion because they've been burned before. People get stuck in toxic cycles just because they're too afraid of change or too selfish to step out of their comfort zone.

So, I finally caught a screening today. Honestly, I wasn't sure where else I could have seen it before the official premiere 🙂
General Impression: It’s got heart and it’s genuinely charming. Technically speaking, the documentary isn't anything groundbreaking—nothing visually flashy to speak of—but honestly, I care way more about the story anyway. This feels like one of those movies made for everyone; my mom or even my grandparents could sit through this just as easily as someone my age, so it definitely hits that sweet spot. Our protagonist, Love and Gangsters, might be a bit much for some, and his delivery gets a little too fast at times, but he’s clearly a good soul at heart. 😛
The crowd in the theater was howling with laughter—even during scenes that weren't actually funny—which can be pretty annoying (though, I guess that atmosphere carries you along, which might be better than watching it alone at home). At times, the film feels like a satirical take on that specific Southern mindset, but it’s just as sad as it is funny. I actually felt really bad for the Bulgarian Woman and her little... well, if that's why the movie is worth seeing, it's because of that raw look at the local mentality. It really shows how people in certain parts of America still view women and marriage.

Anyway, it's a fun, lovely little flick—definitely worth checking out.

I caught it at the Tribeca Film Festival, and I think Martin Scorsese was actually there in person. Honestly, he’s just such an unpleasant guy, if you ask me.
