How to increase DM limits

It’s actually quite baffling—I’d go so far as to say I engage in far fewer private messages than your typical forum user, yet somehow, my inbox still manages to overflow in the blink of an eye.

Yeah, I’m pretty much on board with this too.
I mean, honestly, if you guys end up hitting like 200 messages, I think that’s totally fine, just don't go absolutely overboard or anything. 🙂

Not gonna happen, sorry. 😁 I don't know—honestly, I only care about the messages I actually receive. That's the only reason I even brought up that option—in case anyone else is feeling too lazy to go through the hassle of deleting their sent folder. 😳

If they can't push it past 200, then honestly, I'm all for it... it’s better than pretending to be some kind of expert when you clearly don't know what you're doing. It fills up way too fast, so I find myself constantly scrolling through, deleting things, overthinking everything, just going in circles...
I've kind of gotten used to this routine, where the second I hit send on a message, I'm already rushing to go back and delete it:

I'm on board with that too.

But honestly, it’s such a pain having to go in and delete old messages constantly just to make room for new ones.

Is there actually a technical reason why the number wouldn't see a significant jump, assuming it increases at all?
I'm really not an expert on these kinds of things, so I couldn't say for sure.

I mean, besides taking up more space on the server, I don't think there’s much else to it, I guess. Though even that probably isn't going to be some massive deal, but since this is such a huge forum with a ton of members, bumping things up to 200 seems totally fine to me. It's basically just doubling it, right?🙂

Look, it’s not just about receiving a single message. It’s when you reply to someone, then they reply back, then you hit them again—suddenly you’ve burned through six messages because both sides count toward the total. If you're trying to reach some quick agreement via private messaging, you’re looking at a minimum of eight or ten exchanges just to get the point across. Before you know it, you've wasted ten credits on one conversation, yet you're sitting there with 98 messages in your inbox. You end up having to delete old stuff, and sometimes you're forced to delete things that actually hold important info.

Honestly, 100 messages is way too low, and bumping it to 200 doesn't change a thing. We need at least 500 before it feels like we can actually breathe; anything less than that is basically like nothing was done at all. rustydrifter10, if you have the authority, please just make it happen. If the server starts acting up and the technical admin sees issues on the Control Panel, then sure, scale it back. But let's be real, this isn't going to cause any server issues; it’s not like this puts any load on the system.

Look, you don't actually have to delete important messages. You can just save them to your computer instead. 🙂

If you really sit down and look at the averages, you'll see that most members aren't exactly hitting those massive numbers, so aiming for a limit of around 500 to 1,000 messages feels like a pretty reasonable sweet spot to me. Since we're mostly just dealing with plain text, it isn't exactly a resource hog, and I'm fairly confident we could run some really efficient compression on it to keep things tidy.

I’m talking about keeping important messages as actual evidence in case a deal goes south. I know you can just take screenshots, but let's be real—anyone with Photoshop can manipulate an image easily. At the end of the day, direct messages on Slack are what really count.
I’ve got a massive amount of deals lined up on my plate here, and then someone fails to pull their weight and follow through on their end, and suddenly I'm left holding nothing but air. To make matters worse, I ended up nuking my message history because things were getting frantic and I had to clear space immediately—it wasn't like I had the luxury of sitting there picking and choosing which specific threads to delete. It was just a total mess.

What’s the deal with those 98 messages? 😁



Anyway, I’m all for it—private messages are a tiny blip in the database, especially when you consider how many mindless chat threads exist where people dump more messages in a single week than everyone else does in an entire year.

I set a 1,000 post limit on my own forum, and without digging through the Control Panel, I know for a fact that stuff accounts for a microscopic percentage of the total database size.
