How to increase DM limits

I’m with slycrane94 on this one. This is a forum, not some instant messaging chat—and honestly, deleting posts isn't exactly rocket science if you actually bother to check your 🤷

lol honestly, the amount of storage those messages take up is practically nothing when you look at how many spam threads pop up every single day, plus there are plenty of folks who don't even have Facebook or iMessage just because they belong to a much older generation than the usual social media crowd

if people just don't want to allow it, then that’s one thing, but making excuses that we don't need the feature or saying we can just delete things constantly is honestly pretty lame😳

I honestly think one or two posts is plenty. If this thing swells to a thousand, you’ll just end up nuking through them instantly anyway—you'll hit that point where you have zero unread messages, 999 total, and you're just deleting them one by one to clear the clutter.

Theoretically, no. But in practice, the situation is a bit different.

If the private messaging system worked more like a forum thread—grouping messages with the same subject and participants into one continuous conversation—you could argue that a limit of 1,000 messages per thread would be plenty. But given how it’s actually designed, even with 1,000 messages, we're basically at the point where the first 998 become irrelevant and can just be ignored.

As for those claiming you can just save your messages, sure, you can save them. But trying to follow a coherent conversation within those saved files is about as productive as searching for gold in the upper reaches of the Mississippi, especially when you consider how often people change their usernames; the actual information value of downloaded forum messages eventually drifts pretty close to zero.

A 1,000-message limit is really just a band-aid. Still, it's probably the best patch they can implement without putting even a 1% strain on the disk or processor subsystems of the forum's server.

Well, just like slycrane94 pointed out, if you’re still typing like you’re reading an old-school forum, you might want to switch over to actual instant messaging. There are at least 10,000 different apps out there now.
I honestly don't see why deleting messages is such a massive ordeal.

I mean, damn, is the message count actually going to go up? I'm just venting my own frustrations here.

Not everything on this forum is meant for every single user here. And if I recall correctly, I already made it clear that my issue isn't actually with deleting things, but rather with the saving process itself.

But hey, obviously, we all love our own egos, don't we? Because without them, none of us would have an opinion to share in the first place.

You can always save messages, too. I guess it’s just nicer to have archives of about 1,000 posts rather than dozens of tiny little archives with only 100 each.

Most modern forum software actually supports direct messaging threads now—you know, where your private chats with the same user are grouped together as one "conversation." But, I suppose that's just not how this site works 😁

Comparing PMs to a live chat is also kind of a bedarija. You might see 10,000 entries fly by on a chat in a single evening, so a limit of 500 or 1,000 for a PM isn't really much of a comparison at all.

Every single forum has its own inbox and private messaging system, so this constant, mindless chanting about how "you don't need an inbox" is just completely pointless. If you don't personally need the feature, why does it bother you so much to expand it for the people who actually do?

Honestly, it's nothing more than pure spite at this point.

I can already see this thread being shut down, and we all know it'll be because of the same old trolls like slycrane94 and his crowd.

It’s honestly pathetic watching this guy jump into every single thread that gets opened just to claim he isn't writing as an admin—as if that gives him immunity from everything else—while he constantly mocks the other admin, who apparently acts like a total fool and fails to see exactly what this guy is doing.

But whatever, I don't really care; if you're going to refuse to increase the limit, fine. Why don't you just listen to slywolf45 and slycrane94 and just slash our limit down to one message, or better yet, just scrap private messaging entirely.

I am in favor of raising the limits, provided we follow up by scaling back those users who rack up an excessive number of reports. For instance, when someone first opens an account, they could be granted 50 messages worth of space, but once they’ve hit at least six months of tenure and 100 posts, that limit increases to 200. However, for every ten reports filed against them, the user's space should be reduced by 20 messages. The most frequent offenders would eventually see their inbox dwindle down to just 20 messages, at which point the reductions stop.

I've dropped about 200 messages in here for you all, so I really hope you're happy with that! We're hitting a bit of a wall and can't squeeze out any more for now, but honestly, I think what we've got is pretty solid. 🙂
