Can someone explain what esophageal stenosis actually is and how they treat it?
My dad just got diagnosed with it. For the last month he's had trouble swallowing, and this past week it's gotten so bad he basically can't swallow anything at all. Most of what he eats just ends up coming right back up. He already had an endoscopy, I think that's the right term, and that's when they gave him the diagnosis. Now they're looking into doing a gastroscopy and an ultrasound of his esophagus too.
Thanks in advance.

My dad just got diagnosed with it. For about a month now, he's been having a hard time swallowing (and this past week, it's become almost impossible). Basically, whatever he eats, he ends up throwing up. He had an endoscopy—I think that's the right term—and they gave him this diagnosis, but now they're looking to follow up with a gastroscopy and an ultrasound of the esophagus.
Thanks in advance.

The first priority is figuring out what caused the stenosis in the first place (which is basically just a fancy way of saying the esophagus has narrowed pathologically).
Have you seen any lab results from Google yet? Any pathology reports? Maybe some tumor markers were run?
Has he lost weight?
Does he have a history of anything related to the esophagus, like GERD, Barrett's esophagus, accidental ingestion of caustic substances, chronic alcoholism, or maybe liver issues?
Did they do a CT scan?
A gastroscopy should definitely provide some much-needed answers.

We definitely need a much more detailed medical history before anyone can weigh in on this.

Check the Bell Labs results—are there any abnormal findings? Any tumor markers they might have run?

Is there a history of any specific esophageal issues (like GERD, Barrett's esophagus, maybe caustic ingestion, chronic alcoholism, or liver disease)?

A gastroscopy would definitely be useful here to get some real info.

They haven't done anything besides checking the esophagus because this whole thing was handled "through a connection." He was originally scheduled for a gastroscopy in two months, but someone pulled some strings so he could jump the line and see what's going on now. There aren't any Bell Labs results yet. As for his medical history, he didn't have anything prior, though he did drink quite a bit, I guess—not every single day, but pretty often.
He’s dropped about 6 or 7 pounds in the last ten days since he can't eat, and whatever he does manage to swallow, he just ends up throwing back up.
