They are actually lions... in the world of heraldry, a lion depicted facing forward is referred to as a leopard (since a true leopard figure doesn't exist in heraldic tradition). A lion is technically defined by its profile view, where it is looking to the side—much like how you'd see it described in English texts. Well, I suppose one learns something new every single day.😍
